Have you ever purchased Scentsy products?

Asked by jca (36062points) June 24th, 2014

Someone posted a link on FB. A charity that I donate to posted the link for a sales rep for Scentsy, and she will donate her commission to the charity. I gather that Scentsy does “parties” like Candle Lite and other “party retailers” where a sales rep goes to someone’s house and pushes the products in a party atmosphere. It seems you can also buy online and the rep and charity get a portion of the proceeds.

I looked at the site linked to this certain sales rep. Scentsy makes soap, air fresheners and household stuff like that. I’m into soap – not necessarily other stuff. I’d more consider purchasing because of the charity that the rep will donate her commission to.

Have you ever purchased Scentsy products? Are they good?

Never known about Scentsy until now when I read your question. But are you sure the one who posted that link to you is someone you trust, or just someone random?

Like any other Multi-Level Marketing companies, they sell a mediocre product at ridiculously inflated prices, and pay a tiny portion of the profit to the representative.

If you want to help the charity, I’d suggest making a donation directly yourself, then buying a soap you know you’ll be pleased with. Might I suggest @cazzie’s Floki Soap?

I have a cousin who sells it. I know nothing about it other than she got a free trip to the US out of it to attend and Scentsy convention.

dappled_leaves's avatar

No, but it sounds loathsome. Why not simply make a donation to the charity?

I HATE when people promote this kind of shite on their personal fb page.

I had a coworker who sold that stuff. I use glade same product cheaper… Never used the soaps.

I mean they smell good work as advertised. The. Scents do any way.

The procedes to charity is a different spin.

This wasn’t the person’s personal page, this was on the charity’s page (it’s a homeless dog charity). I have donated to the charity directly once before, by sending them $100 check. I think I will take @Seek‘s advice and refrain from purchasing this product, and if I am feeling generous in the future, send check directly to charity. @Seek: I wish I could purchase cazzie’s soap but the shipping cost would probably be extravagant. I am really a soap fan and love all kinds, and the scents she describes are intriguing!

Yes, I love them. I have a scentsy lamp, and my favorites are Havana cabana, silver bells, home sweet home, cashmere, coconut lemongrass, just to name a few. They make the whole house smell wonderful. I think they are more potent and smell better than the cheap wax chips that you can get at the store, so I am willing to pay more for them. I get them on line – never been to a “party.”

I have never tried their soap. There is a lady here in town that makes the most delicious soaps and sells them at the farmer’s market. Then she started selling on line. Check it out – www.thesoaplady.com .

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Oh, sorry. That is the wrong soap lady. My soap lady is www.thesoaplady.net

I too buy Scentsy and am willing to pay the extra for them. Love them. They outlast any other brand I’ve tried.
I also have never been to a party.

I didn’t know they made soap but if it’s anyway close to their tarts I’d recommend them without even trying them.

@jca There are loads of us soapmakers around. Find local ones and give them a try. Don’t buy the melt and pour clear plastic variety. (sorry, @Skaggfacemutt, but that isn’t soapmaking.) They are loaded with needless chemicals. Find one that makes it from scratch and belongs to a guild or soapmakers group. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go make a new batch of Lavender. The tourists have been going ga ga for it at the new shop.

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

That’s okay, @cazzie . To each his own. I LOVE the Soap Lady’s soaps. They are so pretty, and smell wonderful. They lather well and seem to be good for my skin, so I don’t care how they are made.

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Hey, wait a minute! YOU make soap? How cool is that – do you have a web site?

jca's avatar

@cazzie: Lavender? You’re teasing me now. That’s one of my favorite scents!

jca's avatar

@dappled_leaves: Too many on there for me to list as a favorite – it’s a total tease.

dappled_leaves's avatar

And they give you 20% off for buying “by the slab” – even more tempting? The cinnamon one is to die for!

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Oh great, @dappled_leaves . I am a soap junkie, so now I have to try them.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt Please come back with a full report. :)

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

But I can’t decide! What is your favorite?

dappled_leaves's avatar

Oh, the cinnamon one, definitely. It has these perfectly-sized round seeds. Every shower is a massage. The cherry one is also really good. But I usually get a basketful of different ones when I go.

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Maybe I will get the variety pack for a start. It has cinnamon in it.

I wish RMS had a store nearby. Their shipping rates are $10 minimum, which is a bit steep (I prefer sites where you can buy a certain amount and have zero shipping costs).

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Bummer that I live in the Rocky Mountains, but this soap company is in Canada! I was a little afraid to put in my credit card for an order, because it was in Canadian dollars, but lo and behold, the adjustment was made automatically and they withdrew less due to the exchange. I didn’t mind the shipping cost because the soap is cheaper than I expected. Now to see if I like it.

rojo's avatar

If anyone is interested I know a company down here that will make you soap from your favorite beer. The offer a couple of standards but will take special orders.

cazzie's avatar

I’ve got a beer soap downstairs I made from Guinness. I put actual hops in it for a scrubby effect, but it’s not for the faint of heart. It has a very ‘botanical’ scent, you could say. LOL. I should bring it to the store for shits and giggles. Just because I don’t particularly think it’s great, doesn’t mean others won’t like it.

jca's avatar

Whole Foods has nice, unusual soaps.

Seek's avatar

I WANT GUINNESS SOAP! Put it on Etsy so I can buy it from you.

Oh, and I got the pick maker. Thank you! I’ve annihilated all my gift cards and now need to dig out some old vinyl records that no one cares about. I may have to hunt for some 45s. They’re a bit thinner, I think.

dappled_leaves's avatar

I have to admit, I’m puzzled about people wanting to smell like beer. I mean, if it’s going to make people think you’ve been drinking several beer, why not enjoy drinking actual beer?

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

@dappled_leaves Yeah, I would get in trouble at work if I smelled like beer. No, thanks! Besides, I don’t really like beer smell.

cazzie's avatar

@dappled_leaves It doesn’t smell like beer at all. It smells more like hay. I also put bergamot essential oil in it, so it smells like an earthy citrus. It isn’t bad, really.

@Seek I have a box here with your name on it, I need to throw some soap in it, I guess. ;) I’m glad you are enjoying that pick maker. Are you using a bit of sandpaper on them?

Seek's avatar

Planning on it. I have some 180 grit that should bevel the edges nicely. Of course my husband is the single most pick-picky musician on the planet and they’re just “not the right shape” for him.

He’s been using the same brand for 20 years. Seriously.

Anyway, more picks for you. I’m thinking about putting a call out on Craigslist asking for people’s used gift cards. Seems better than just clearing out the wall of “no value until activated” cards at WalMart. Haha.

Good idea, @Seek.
