What do you wish restaurants had that they almost never do?

Asked by JLeslie (65418points) November 16th, 2015 from iPhone

I want caffeine free iced tea or caffeine free Coke. Even if they had regular black caffeine free hot tea (Decaf Lipton’s or English breakfast would both be fine) I could make iced tea, but restaurants almost never offer it.

Restaurant covers anything from local, chain, fast food, buffets, expensive, anywhere we eat out.

Exotic and taboo meats, like dog.

More dishes focused around beer pairings, not wine pairings.

Caffeine free Diet Coke. In order to drink something caffeine free, I usually either have to drink water or something sugary like 7-Up.

A pitcher of icewater on the table.

I like a pitcher or carafe of water too! Once in a blue moon I have experienced that. I much prefer it to a huge glass of water, which I find is often the case in many chain restaurants. Or, a small glass in places very focused on selling wine, and they can’t keep up with filling my water glass.

Interesting, a lot of restaurants in the Bay Area will put a carafe of water on the table, if you ask for water (since we are in a drought).

If you want a tea without caffeine, why not get an herbal tea?

JLeslie's avatar

@zenvelo That’s the problem, they usually have herbal teas if you want decaf.

Fresh fruit.

I have never been refused a pitcher of water. Simply ask for one.

More low or lower fat options. I am not on a particularly strict diet, but I feel better when I eat low-fat since I lost my gallbladder. Some days it would just be nice to have something not-deep fried and not-drowning in butter.

I second the water thing. There used to be a lovely Thai restaurant that brought out glasses of water with the menus, and a pot of green tea with your entree. I loved that. Never had to order a drink separately.

Working kitchens.

Too many restaurants depend on microwaving pre-prepared foods.

Stevia for coffee and tea, and Kombucha for a beverage alternative.
Both are getting better in my town.

Diet white soda. 7-Up, Sierra Mist, Sprite…any will do.

Also, grilled fish. I’m in the Midwest and everyone thinks seafood has to be deep fat fried. Bleh.

I would love to find a coffeehouse with healthy, substantial breakfast foods that are quick to eat. Like homemade granola bars with lots of fruit and nuts, vegetarian breakfast burritos, to-go cups of oatmeal with lots of fancy toppings… I don’t know, surprise me!

Nobody will ever do this because breakfast is the least profitable meal of the day.

@Haleth, my nephew is opening his second restaurant in Dubai that sounds right up your alley! It’s called H.E.A.T. (Healthy Eats And Treats)

Multiple vegetarian offerings that are actually well thought out and delicious, rather than just an iceberg lettuce salad with mealy pink tomatoes and stale croutons. Things like This and This and This

Veggie burgers and sweet potato fries in fast food restaurants.

Breakfast served all day and for dinner at other types of restaurants besides Denny’s and McDonald’s.

Decent freshly brewed iced tea, rather than the stuff that comes out of the soda machines with the weird (and old) after taste.

Good house made salsa as a regular condiment.

Imaginative vegetarian salads at restaurants that are not strictly vegetarian. Like This and This and This

Salad that is not 90 percent lettuce, and still with a 14 dollar price tag.
