What do you think of Ivana Trump's comment on immigration? Will it help or hurt Donald?

Asked by chyna (51308points) April 4th, 2016

“As long as you come here legally and get a proper job . . . we need immigrants,” she said. “Who’s going to vacuum our living rooms and clean up after us? Americans don’t like to do that.”
From the Boston Globe here is the interview. As a side note, she is Czechoslovakian,

She’s not the first idiot that thinks that people come here and get given welfare and housing, etc. when they’re not citizens. I see crap posted all the time by people who think Mexicans and others come here and get handed things. Wrong wrong wrong. As far as immigrants vacuuming the living rooms, that’s because she’s so rich and out of touch with reality. That’s her world. The world of people who have hired help.

@jca I have it on very good authority that immigrants are seduced into coming here with gift baskets full of teddy bears and soccer balls. We practically drag them over kicking and screaming.

I think everyone knows how vacuous the whole family is, except possibly the oldest daughter. But she keeps her mouth shut. So, Zzzzzz. Vote Bernie. Even the birds like him.

I think nothing of it. This is the first I’ve heard of it. I don’t hang on every word uttered by candidates and their families. Between the press and the idiocy of the population talking talking talking about basically nothing for what…...three years prior to the election. I will cast an informed vote in November.

She’s 100% right.

The way she said it was pretty obtuse, but the fact is that society – any society: American, Russian, German, whatever – needs people to work at all economic strata. Which means that we need lettuce pickers and dishwashers and gardeners and janitors, just as much as we need professors and businessmen. Perhaps more.

She is speaking honestly. (more than Donald does). Like I said, the probably could have approached it with more politesse – but facts are facts. She’s right on this.

Do you mean that she said something that a thinking person might object to? How do you suppose something like that would hurt Trump’s chances? Since when have the objections of thinking people slowed down his rise in the polls?

I thought it was an ugly thing to say. Ugly and mean spirited. So… of a piece with everything else about his campaign basically.

My god, that’s a woman?

NerdyKeith's avatar

That was a nasty and racist thing to say. Typical elitist attitude.

Why on Earth would it help or hurt? She isn’t running for anything. She speaks for nobody but herself.

Vacuuming and dusting? As an immigrant married to The Donald, I am sure she is doing her share of sucking and wiping, and not just in the living room.

NerdyKeith's avatar

@filmfann Omg that’s not something I want to think about.

I have an exercise for you, a challenge if you will:

Imagine Michelle Obama saying those exact words.

Imagine President Obama’s saying the things Trump says.

It’s…a shock.

Here2_4's avatar

Uh, Ivana is not married to Trump. She was, several years back. There is a difference for sure.

For the record, our staff are english born & bred save for the gardener’s assistant Jock Strap, who I believe hails from scotland, ballsy fellow, full of spunk.

She’s been divorced from Donald Trump for a quarter of a century, so I’m not really sure why it would help or hurt him.
