What position do you sleep in at night to get the best rest?

Asked by AloraCrimson (503points) June 26th, 2017

What position do you guys sleep in to get the best rest? Last night I was kind of tossing and turning and trying to find a comfortable position. I ended up taking a sleeping pill. Does sleep position matter? I’ve heard that it’s bad to sleep on your left side?

Do you use a pillow, body pillow, cover yourself in the sheets, etc?

I’d like to get better sleep and feel well rested in the morning. I’m thinking about buying a body pillow to help me sleep, or even try aromatherapy.

Thanks everyone!

I sleep on my side. I move from one side to the other while asleep.

I alternate sides, and occasionally am on back or front for a bit, but mostly side works for me. Everyone is different, though. Covers depend on heat. Usually one pillow under head and often hand on/around/against something (e.g. pillow, cat, woman).

Front side down.
Front side up makes me restless, and lying on the sides puts way too much pressure on the shoulders and upper arms.

If only I could find a comfortable sleeping position. Once you get to be a woman of a certain age, there is pretty much no chance for a comfortable, or restful sleep : (

I have been taking Melatonin for about a year now. It does help me to become sleepy enough to go to bed, but I still wake up multiple times a night (still better than before, when I had insomnia so bad, I was regularly up until 4 am, and still getting up at 6:30 am to get ready for work). But comfortable, restful sleep was something that left me in my mid-40’s. I am now in my early 50’s. Luckily, the Melatonin does not leave me with any “hangover” type of feeling, so once I get up and have a cup of coffee and a shower, I’m good to go, but the sleeping part is still for crap.

I usually sleep on my right side, although I occasionally fall asleep on my left side. And I know that I roll over from side to side in the night.

I rarely sleep on my back, and never on my stomach with my head turned.

I sleep on my stomach. Everyone has a different position that suits them.

@AloraCrimson I am a side sleeper. Usually like a buckwheat hull pillow. (I can shift the hulls to get comfortable) I sleep with a pillow (regular) between my ankles and knees. I happened on that by accident and find it very comfortable.

My doctor suggested that I don’t sleep on my chest so my sister sewed some marbles into a tank-top where my nipples are. It is really effective at getting me to not sleep on my chest.

I’m still not sure why sleeping on my chest is bad.

Perhaps I should get a second opinion.

I rotate like a chicken rotisserie. I flip and exchange my pillows every 2 minutes to cool off.

I sleep on my side, have to pretty much. I have that crap that happens when you sleep on your back and forget to breath. Then I wake up freaking out and gasping for air. No problems like that when I sleep on my side.

I believe I subconsciously switch between fetus position and the position where I simply put my arms above me. Perhaps my body know that sleeping in one position for too long will hurt the bones and cause cramps.

Start out on my back, no telling how I end up.

I prop up two medium sized pillows at an angle and lay on my back at about a 20ยบ angle. Then I place a small pillow behind my neck. Then I put in my ear plugs and place a cover over my eyes. Finally I let my right arm dangle off the side of the bed. That works for me. Any other position cause my arms to go numb (possible RSI nerve damage in my arms).

I’m a restless, hot sleeper and I always wake up with all covers on the floor & a wadded mess of pillows. I went to a mattress store for a solution.
It wasn’t a $2000 bed. It was $170 pillow! I know, that’s a fuck-ton to spend on a pillow but it’s a cooling gel/memory foam marriage that gives me perfect sleep every night. And with a 5 year warranty, it is a lot cheaper than a new mattress!

On my sides. I turn over, probably like every 40 minutes or so…
I have been sleeping on a couch for the last year or so. Lost my bed to a flood. I actually sleep better on the old couch, than in most beds. I miss my old matress. It was just a matress on the floor, but I slept well on it…

On my right side usually, sometimes I will roll over to my right.
