Am I just imagining it?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) November 8th, 2017

Fluther has seemed very quiet lately. Do you know if a lot of people have people left? I know someone was banned recently and I am not discussing that, but I think after that happened things went a bit dead.

It saddens me to think we are all becoming dead fish in the water?

Are you finding it quiet? Or am I just imagining it?

Perhaps it is time for a roll-call?

Marinelife here. Fluther goes through waves of activity and waves of quiet. I, for one, an happy to leave some of the drama behind for awhile.

LornaLove's avatar

@marinelife Thanks marinelife it’s good to see you.

marinelife's avatar

You too, @LornaLove! We’ve been through quite a few life changes in our years on Fluther, haven’t we?

jonsblond's avatar

@marinelife is correct about the waves. It happens all the time, especially since Auggie left her post as manager and Ben and Andrew moved on.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Waves, ripples, storms, and sometimes still as glass…

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

It is indeed quieter than at other times.

This too shall pass.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I’m still here.

chyna's avatar

It does seem quieter lately, but quiet isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I like it better than fighting and bickering.

Yes, many people have left because of the kerfuffle. They are angry, with good reason.

Right now, this is a sinking ship.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Very quiet, but as said above v V ^.

Goes up and down.

rebbel's avatar

Might be sinking, might not be, but the band keeps on playing, albeit quietly.

jonsblond's avatar

Been a sinking ship for a few years. Nothing new.

janbb's avatar

@rebbel Are they playing “Nearer My God to Thee”?

canidmajor's avatar

The site’s seen worse than the most recent fuss, @Kardamom, and it’s still afloat. Quieter, yes, then it will likely pick up steam again soon.

Kardamom's avatar

A lot of people have left for good, because they thought that things over here are not run fairly. Those people are not coming back.

chyna's avatar

Oh well.

canidmajor's avatar

I have seen people leave “for good” a number of times. Lots come back. Frankly, I’m surprised that you’re still here, @Kardamom, you have been outspoken on more than one occasion about your dissatisfaction with how things are done here.

Mariah's avatar

I can link you quips going back 5, 6 years, maybe more, declaring that Fluther is in its “death throes.”

Been throeing quite awhile if that’s the case.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I’m here and plan to stick around. I’m paying it forward.

Kardamom's avatar

@canidmajor Are people not allowed to be outspoken or question things on this site?

canidmajor's avatar

oh, @Kardamom, do read my post more carefully. I merely expressed surprise that you hadn’t left, I didn’t say anything about ”...people not allowed…” blah blah blah.

janbb's avatar

I agree with you @Mariah – it has ebbed and flowed for many a year.

cookieman's avatar

cookieman here.

Chips and all.

I think you are right, it has become quieter. Maybe the tide has gone out?

janbb's avatar

Awash in dead jellyfish?

I think the tide will come in again. Not as high as in former years but still…..

Lessening my presence.
Lessening the threads I click on.
Tired of certain practices.
Still, around for some special moments, and hoping to see more humor, less attacks, personal or political.

While some good members have left, I think many good members have joined since their departures.

Also, we’ve had some departures who have rejoined, and I’m glad to see them back.,

It’s interesting, to me, how people get so upset here. All involvement here is voluntary.

I think I’ve been here for a year now, and many jellies have come and gone. I usually estimate a jelly’s Fluther “age” by their lurve. Someone with 30,000 has been around for a while. I thought those jellies had been around long enough to go with the flow, and saw them as sort of elders/role models here. I slowly started seeing some disappear, and learned that some had been banned or left. I didn’t understand how they would suddenly leave, or become a nuisance then. I don’t get it now either.

I guess some jellies just snap. The angriest I’ve ever been here, was due to a Pitt Bull thread. I eventually said my piece and simply didn’t return to the thread.

I remember HC took constant beatings (yes, he deserved some of them,) and he had to be banned eventually (although I still don’t know why.)

The pond is very much a community. Arguments, and disagreements are inevitable. But there is much to be gained by staying here, I think.

Glad to see some familiar faces (accounts) after logging in after ages

@MrGrimm888 I miss peoples input, their value, and their opinions. Some I didn’t like, but who cares, that creates the dynamism here I think. I agree people being banned after years? Crazy that. If the person was stalking, harassing, being sexually abusive, or threatening violence then I can understand a ban. I don’t understand bans if they are over a difference of opinion.
Anyway, I can’t judge I have no idea why all of the people that were banned, got banned.

I’d be so sad to see fluther dwindle to nothing, it was a fab site with fantastic people on it at one time. There are still fantastic people on it at this time.

I just can’t get over how small it is or how it’s echoing a little.

Especially when this sites gold card was its community feel.

MrGrimm888's avatar

It does have a bit of an echo. But I like it here. There are not just new jellies that can stick, but jellies I have never seen stopping by. I agree with others here, that it ebs and flows. I don’t know if I would like it as much if we gained like 200 jellies in a day or something.

I enjoy the pace. I can be gone for a day, and still not be too far behind on a thread.

The moderation team has never banned a user over a difference of opinion. When it is a long time member they are usually banned for repeat offenses over many years, many of which go unseen to the rest of us. If they banned users for differences of opinions there would be no one left.

I’ve spoken to a few longtime members who have been banned and their excuse if often unfair moderation. The mods will tell you the truth. It is never over unfair moderation.
