How close is the outbreak to where you live?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) March 18th, 2020

We have 67 cases in state, 4 of which are local to me. I just read that the second person within a 10 mile radius of my home was put on a ventilator in critical condition- a 40 year old nonsmoker with no prior health issues. Even though we’ve been anticipating it, this feels shockingly close now. How many cases are in your state? Your hometown?

Only one or two in my city or area. 39 in my province of Alberta.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Two in my county. The flu however, is widespread.

Patty_Melt's avatar

One in my county.
There are many open beds in my state.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

As of last night BC has 186 confirmed cases and 9 deaths, the majority are in the lower mainland but the interior has a few cases as well but they are not telling us where those cases are located.

elbanditoroso's avatar

The closest to me are in Athens, GA – about a 30–35 minute drive.

There are several cases on the northwest side of Atlanta, and also more in central Atlanta, but that’s further.

As of now. Could change in 15 minutes.

canidmajor's avatar

As of this morning, 68 confirmed cases in CT, one in my town. We are on the corridor between NYC and Boston, the spread will get faster and more intense very quickly.

longgone's avatar

I’m right in the center. There are almost 4000 in my state. 40 patients in the closest major city, about a 15 minute drive away.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I’m keeping positive thoughts for you.

longgone's avatar

^ Me? Aw, thanks. I’m not leaving the house, except for walks in the woods. The few people I see there get a wave from a safe distance.

janbb's avatar

Close to 200 in my state; one person in my county has died.

seawulf575's avatar

there are 63 cases in my state, only 1 in my county. No, I’m not the one!

ucme's avatar

Okay, so here in County Durham out of a population of 56K, we have 1 confirmed case.
No fear, no panic!

KNOWITALL's avatar

Seven in my county, a city over, last time I heard.
I’m on day 6 of social isolation, still doing great and working from home extended through next week.

rebbel's avatar

Over hundred nearly two hundred in my province, one case in my city (23, female, vacationed in Lombardy, Italy).

chyna's avatar

Only one in my whole state. It’s as far from me as it could possibly be.

anniereborn's avatar

As of yesterday 160 in my state. None in my county but some a couple counties over.

janbb's avatar

Oops – make that 427 in my state.

canidmajor's avatar

First death in CT just announced. :-(

elbanditoroso's avatar

@canidmajor – glad that you’re on the scoreboard.

Demosthenes's avatar

55 cases here in Nevada. 1 death. I’m more concerned about my parents who are both over 60 and are in the Bay Area, where there have been quite a bit more cases and deaths.

canidmajor's avatar

@elbanditoroso I am taking this very seriously. Trying to avoid grocery stores, considering an outdoor Farmers Market for fresh stuff. Because (last I checked) it hasn’t aerosolized, I’ll even have a bandanna over nose and mouth when within a couple of feet of strangers. But really, mostly I’ll do that to look cool and like an outlaw. ;-)

SergeantQueen's avatar

4 in my county. 90 in my state. (Wisconsin)

Milwaukee county, right next door to me, is up to 40 cases I believe.

kritiper's avatar

Seattle is 500 miles away.
I was in to see the dentist three weeks ago. The next week a person who tested positive for CORVID-19 was in the same building.
9 in this state as of today. March 18, 2020.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Like, 2 cases way north of me in KC. It’ll get here eventually.

Mimishu1995's avatar

At least 3 in my country. One case was from a shop 15-minute walk from my home.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

45 new cases today in BC 9 now in the interior, but the media wont say where those cases are.

Jons_Blond's avatar

117 in Wisconsin. 23 confirmed in my immediate area.

jca2's avatar

I’m in NY right next to CT and right near Westchester County, which is where New Rochelle is (the city with the first positive case who, after over two weeks, just woke up out of a medically induced coma today). The CT city I live near has cases, too, at the hospital.

I just left work today to start “working from home” so I am glad I won’t be exposed as much.

Jeruba's avatar

Santa Clara County, California: 6 deaths nearby, 155 cases as of yesterday. We’re under shelter-in-place orders. Three out of four members of my household are high risk, one extremely high.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I’m starting to wonder if we should brush lambs blood over our doors.
The mood currently around the world makes me think of that scene in The Ten Commandments when a hand shaped cloud drops its fingertips to the ground.

I want it to stop.

Dutchess_III's avatar

16 in Kansas now, 1 death.

janbb's avatar

797 in my state today.

Jons_Blond's avatar

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Wisconsin increased 46 percent overnight, the state Department of Health Services reports.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I am not anywhere near panicking or stocking up, but I also would not put myself in a crowd. I heard the Florida beaches are jam packed. What the hell is wrong with those people?

SergeantQueen's avatar

@Jonsblond and it is increasing in Milwaukee and Dane county. How come? Do you notice people out more where you are? I wonder if people are just not taking this serious like they should. Waukesha County is the 3rd largest county but we only have 5 cases, moving up very slowly. We are the 3rd largest but nowhere near as dense as the City of Milwaukee and Madison, even in our cities.

Jons_Blond's avatar

^We now have community spread. Numbers will continue to climb. Some people aren’t taking this seriously but the majority of people are staying home. The streets are pretty quite and it’s so strange.

Our cities are denser so it spreads quicker. It was spreading before everything shutdown.

seawulf575's avatar

The ranking of the US is somewhat misleading. It really depends on how countries are reporting numbers. And as populations go, we are 3rd largest in the world but we fall to number sixth for infections. But even that could be misleading since we haven’t been doing much testing specifically for Covid-19.

rebbel's avatar

The ranking, and numbers, of all countries (currently in the midst of it) could be misleading.
But in this case I would go with a bad or worse case scenario, cause one numbers that is probably not misleading is that of deaths.
We in Europe are basically in lock down, England felt the scare today (it is reported here).
Brace yourself, it’s most likely going to be a surreal, bumpy ride.
You’ll get to see sides of people you couldn’t dream possible, both bad and good.
I wish you, and us all, good luck, and good health.

SavoirFaire's avatar

About 100 in the state, and the nearest city just had its first confirmed case yesterday. The hoarders have been reined in, however, and the grocery stores are stocked up again. All the schools are closed, but we have online education at all levels. So my son and I are working with his teacher every week to keep him on track.

I’m not teaching this semester, which is too bad because I had a preexisting system for holding online classes. I’ve been able to help some of my colleagues get their own classes up and running, though.

SergeantQueen's avatar

Wow. I guess it jumped up to 12 now, in Waukesha County

anniereborn's avatar

First confirmed case in our county just hours ago.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

We’re up to 119 in state and 7 near me since I posted this question.

Stay safe, jellies.

Jeruba's avatar

If you don’t mind, please mention your state or locale. This isn’t where we come for global stats, of course, but it does have a bearing on the experience we’re sharing.

longgone's avatar

I commented two days ago, and the number of infections in my part of Germany continues to climb. It’s 6000 now.

Stay inside.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Since this all started,as of today BC has 271 confirmed cases, 17 in the hospital, and 8 deaths.

SergeantQueen's avatar

3 deaths now, the closest one is Milwaukee county, Wisconsin. About 45 mins away from me.

AlaskaTundrea's avatar

No deaths, thank goodness, tho’ Alaska is up to 17 confirmed. Closest still Anchorage, some 40 or 50 miles from me, depending on exact locations, which I don’t know.

Jons_Blond's avatar

One hundred new cases were confirmed across the state (Wisconsin) over the past day, according to the agency’s daily update of results. The total number of positive cases now stands at 381. More than 6,000 tests have come back negative, while the number of death remains at four.

In Dane Co. (where I live), a dozen more tests came back positive bringing the number there to 61.

SergeantQueen's avatar

^^ Waukesha County is now at 20. Milwaukee is over 100
It’s scary being right in the middle of two counties with growing cases (and community spreading)

AlaskaTundrea's avatar

Alaska is up to a total of 31 cases, two of which were just ID’d as being in my borough/county. No city given yet.

SergeantQueen's avatar

Waukesha is at 30, Milwaukee just had a new death.
This tracker is now getting a lot more in depth and is showing specific counties instead of states

chyna's avatar

16 in my state, 1 in my town.

rebbel's avatar

650 in my province (3.7 million), in the Netherlands.

Brian1946's avatar

My county’s population is about 10.1 million. As of now, there have been 409 cases with 5 deaths.

My geographic community has a population of about 70,000, with 7 cases.

Brian1946's avatar

I live in Los Angeles county.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

ASof today BC has 472 cases and 13 deaths, and the fun has yet to begin.

canidmajor's avatar

As of this morning in CT: 415 confirmed cases, 10 fatalities.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I noticed that my state has the majority of cases in counties which a highway runs through to include a couple of sizeable cities. So maybe people who visited those cities from direct routes are getting it from where there’s a more dense population.
Has anyone else noticed any such trends?

KNOWITALL's avatar

Missouri just went on stay at home lock down in several counties. $1000 fine or 7 days in jail for any non-essential travel.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Wow. Y’all ain’t foolin’ around!

SergeantQueen's avatar

@KNOWITALL Wisconsin is following suit. State wide. $250 dollar find or 30 days in jail :/
Lots of people on facebook saying it’s a violation of our constitutional rights… Kinda feel they are crazy

Patty_Melt's avatar

People using the Constitution as a weapon give me a headache.

SergeantQueen's avatar

@Patty_Melt They were citing the first amendment right to freedom of religion—but this isn’t taking away religion by any means. Most of the churches near me are offering online services and if theirs isn’t, they can temporarily join in on another’s. That is—if religion is as important to them as they say it is. They’d probably rather bitch and moan than go for other solutions.

janbb's avatar

@SergeantQueen You’re right. My congregation is doing online services and virtual coffee hours and meetings.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Exactly!
There is a difference between using the Constitution as a reference, and using it as a weapon. Some people just throw it around when they are unhappy about something. It was never meant to be anybody’s blankie.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

145 new cases in BC today Mar24,2020 bringing the total to 617 and the public isn’t listening to social distancing , why are people so fucking stupid?

It is hitting longterm care homes hard, and that is the field Mrs Squeeky works, scaring me to death.

anniereborn's avatar

How in the world would anyone know if you were going somewhere essential or not?

Patty_Melt's avatar

I imagine it is mostly meant as a deterrent.

jca2's avatar

In NY, there are currently over 26,000 cases and 271 deaths, as of Wed. morning, 3/25/2020.

I live right next to CT, which has a lot less, but has a way lower population.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Public parks are closed and all dining rooms. Carry out and delivery only.

@Patty I’m all about the Constitution and our right to assemble, etc… But during a global pandemic we once again trade our rights for safety, just like the Patriot Act. Slippery slope.

Jons_Blond's avatar

302 confirmed cases in my county. The majority in my city. We have 11 confirmed cases at a nursing home in my city. 7 confirmed cases at the Dane County jail. A confirmed case of an employee at Trader Joe’s which is a mile from my home.

I really dread going to work right now at the grocery I work at.
