Shouldn't banks suffer alongside everyone else during this crisis?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23122points) March 22nd, 2020

If people are forced out of work during this Covid crisis, shouldn’t the banks feel it too?
Example: if someone is forced out of work for three weeks, and has a mortgage then the bank should reduce that months payment by 75% with no interest fees, only fair right?
This crisis is sending us into a global recession, and doing what I suggested might slow that down right?

It ain’t gonna happen. Or rather, the banks are gonna take a hit, but there’s no way in hell that they will volunteer. Credit card debt is gonna go through the roof, and the default rate on debt is also going to skyrocket. Shelter in place will not pay the bills.

There are discussions in Congress about mortgage, rental and debt payments being delayed for some months. I don’t know if they will pass but it is possible. I think the lending companies will have no choice but to make concessions.

Contrary to your outlook @SQUEEKY2 ,here’s what they are really doing. By the way Banks don’t want to own house because of bad times.

Banks never lose. Politicians are in their pockets. No matter what short-term concessions are made, the banks will make money in the long term.

I don’t think wanting others to suffer is the way out of anything.

Profiting off a crisis is despicable. The general welfare should be the public priority, and at the personal level we have to do what we can to take care of one another. But if no one and nothing stays healthy, that’s pretty final.

No no no! It would be so against the law for a bank to close down for more than 1 day. I imagine, though, they’re down to a skeleton staff.

A lot of vague “you can call your credit card company ask for for help” in there.

I’ll ask them to erase my debt and give me a pony. This is gonna be sweet! I’ve always wanted a pony!

FYI, this “They can’t shut your shit off” is bull. They shut my phone off yesterday, until I paid the bill.
