What does a funeral parlor smell like (Really NSFW)?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24490points) November 1st, 2020

While walking to get groceries there was a strong BBQ smell. I was in between a seniors’ lodge and a funeral parlor. I never wondered before, but what does a crematorium smell like when in use?

They don’t cremate people at a funeral parlor so my bet is on BBQ at the seniors’ lodge.

@janbb Phew! It made me hungry. I was wondering about myself.

The funeral home probably uses the barbecue joint for its cremations. Either that, or, If the two are side by side, the barbecue restaurant may have started out of the crematorium.

Most likely the senior place was having a BBQ. Funeral homes generally don’t do cremations themselves. Modern cremators tend to be beyond the facilities or budgets of most funeral homes (even if cremation is a cheaper service for the “customer” than a standard burial), and they tend to be located away from residential areas.

Actually @janbb, most funeral homes also provide cremation services.
That aside, they probably smell like embalming fluids.

@Dutchess_III

They offer it as an option, but do not perform cremations themselves. They outsource that.

The only Funeral Parlor I went to was when my late Father passed away and the family all went together to arrange and then attend the Funeral .

The area was cold and I am sure air conditioning was on or nowadays ‘Air Purifiers” are used so no smell unless scented candles were being used?

A professional Funeral Parlor would be careful of its surroundings to make it peaceful and comforting to visitors.

Hand sanitizer and surface cleaning wipes. (I was in one a couple of weeks ago.)
