Have you changed the colors in your home drastically over the years?

Asked by JLeslie (65420points) 1 month ago

Paint, furniture, floors, accent pieces, new linens, any of it.

What prompted you to change? Did furniture wear out, did you move, just time for something new.

Do you miss the old color scheme?

Was it difficult for you to change the colors?

I’ve done some big changes over the years, but this time it is tougher for me to decide. I like too many things now. When I was a young adult and newly married we had white walls and bright colored furniture and artwork. Kind of Caribbean feeling. Then we went more neutral with off whites and beige and medium-dark wood cabinets and more Mediterranean style. Eventually, our colors went darker, greens and browns and some rust and beige. We are getting ready for a change. Furniture is getting old, accent pillows are getting flat, and my husband keeps talking about buying something new.

I miss the bright colors sometimes. I still have some knickknacks and dishes from that era. It was very fun, but then other decor I find more beautiful. Not sure what I will do next. No matter what it winds up being eclectic. I don’t do an entire design overhaul, too expensive and some things are sentimental.

We have changed some of the colors in the house over time. We just got new furniture last year, but we went with colors that didn’t offend the color of the walls. No sense making extra work for ourselves! We also got a new rug in the family room. It changed the appearance of the room quite a bit.

A few year back we really changed the outside colors, though. When we bought the house it was a weird yellow color with black shutters. It is now a nice green with rosy shutters. It sounds like an odd combination, even the painters agreed. But when it was done it looked so good they asked if they could get pictures of it to possibly be used in advertising.

Only through Philips Hue™ variable colour light bulbs.

@seawulf575 I didn’t mention rugs, that’s another thing I would change for a color change, but I’m having a hard time thinking about getting rid of my old rug.

The exterior paint colors sound lovely. I’m a big fan of shades of green, and the rosey sounds like a perfect compliment color.

I went from boring beige to mostly gray walls in the last 10 years. But I totally get what you are saying. I go through a store here called Home Goods (you may have them in your state, too) and I see hundreds of things that I want that doesn’t match anything. I will like pictures of birds, ocean scenes, a dark forest scene. I can’t afford to change up my decor, but I can still look and dream.
My niece was left about 30K in someone’s will. She redid her entire house. Spent every penny. It looks very pretty, but she is at poverty level and really should have used most of the money for everyday living.
@JLeslie Are you going to have wood floors? You can change up the rugs easier and cheaper than changing carpet. One thing I’m not clear on with rugs on hardwoods: What size rug should you get? Is it supposed to sit in the middle of the floor, only right in front of the couch, cover most of the floor and only sit about a foot from the walls?

@chyna That’s too bad that she spent all of the money. Is she on Medicaid? I wonder if she can’t have money in the bank to keep her benefits. I don’t know how Medicaid looks at inheritance. That really is a shame though.

The rug I have is square and I love the size and shape, and it is really hard to find “inexpensive” rugs that are square. I think I bought it in Home Depot or Lowe’s about 20 years ago.

I’m terrible with how big a rug should be and does the furniture go on top of it. I’ve read the front feet of the sofas should be on the rug? My rug the furniture is right at the edge, it isn’t on it. Now, I’ll start looking at that more in Houzz photos. Thanks for mentioning it.

@JLeslie Are you in one house or two now? I know you have the Villages place and were looking at houses near your husband’s job. Did you ever buy one?

The best color I’ve ever picked was a cream with grey undertones in my last apartment. It shifted from warm to cool depending on the light, and I found it very calming. It was called Woodwind, but I forget what brand. I always joke that my dream job would be naming paint colors.

^^What paint brand?

janbb's avatar

^^ She just said she can’t remember the brand.

Maybe Benjamin Moore?

Thanks. I am going to try to google. Sometimes I see amazing white colors and I never can find the name. I painted my South Beach condo in a color I loved and for the life of me I cannot figure out the color again. It was many years ago. It similarly had both a grey and cream undertone that was great.

Tip: I keep the little square paint sample from the store, write which room I used it on and attach it to a key ring I have just for this.

@JLeslie, remember that you can’t judge true color from a computer screen. Set two computers side by side and access the same image. Chances are you’ll see distinct color differences.

Well I was stuck on Marzipan for 103 years. But if we ever get around to finishing this house it’ll be a light grey.
My wall decor has pretty much stayed the same because the pieces all have some special meaning or importance to me.

We had our whole house redone a year ago because of flooding, new flooring and walls, but the same old furniture. I don’t like the walls or the family room floor, but I do like the carpeting in the hall and bedrooms. The last time we redid the house, 10 or more years ago, we had more money and I was able to customize the rooms, so I liked them more.

To answer the question, I’ve gone from Linen white in most rooms to more a creamy Cameo or Antique white in most. Very drastic indeed!

I used to like muted, beachy colors, but now like jewel tones. Since don’t have control over wall colors as we don’t own, we’re limited to rugs, furniture and curtains. But it all ends up a giant playroom… so decor will have to wait until another phase in life (if ever).

We removed most of the carpet in our house and replaced that with hardwood in the main area, and laminate in two of the bedrooms. It made a big difference for my husband’s allergies, and it looks better.

We also got rid of the horrific wallpaper in the master bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom was painted, but not the bathroom. The goal is an overhaul of the bathroom as it is extremely dated.

The downstairs – kitchen, dining room, living room – is a fairly open area, and we desperately need to paint it.

Wanted to add that I have a red brick house that was built in the late 50’s. My fireplace was also the same red brick. I took a chance and white washed it in January. Everyone that has seen it loves it.

@chyna I see that a lot on FB and Instagram. It really lightens up the whole room when there’s not the big brick heavy colored fireplace.
