Got a "feel good" movie recommendation?

Asked by alive (2953points) March 21st, 2009

Its a cloudy day, I’m feeling blue, I want to eat some chocolate (maybe hot chocolate) and some popcorn (yes, I’m a total health nut!) and watch a movie to put me in a better mood.

Usually I would go to Amelie, but I don’t want to have to read all the subtitles. Also, I don’t want anything heavy with some “deeper” meaning. Just something light hearted, and maybe even “cute.”

So got any suggestions?

How about Juno? I saw it recently and it was both funny and had a feel good gist to it.

@Bluefreedom That was supposed to be a “feel good” movie??

Grandma’s Boy is hysterical. Strange Wilderness, Role Models. All funny movies. The Rocker, if you like Rainn Wilson.

if you want a chick flick type movie, watch House Bunny. I thought it was cute.

Almost Famous…I guess it’s kind of intense, but I love it.

Knocked Up?

WALL-E! or some other Pixar movie.

I just saw I Love You Man in theaters last night and it was pretty hilarious, so if you can find it online already or pull yourself out of bed to go see it, I would recommend it.

Lars and the Real Girl, Juno or Be Kind Rewind are all feel goodish imo.

My husband and I watched Made of Honor with Patrick Dempsey and were surprised that it was quite good and funny, because it had gotten such bad reviews.

@shadling21 That was going to be my suggestion. Great movie. :)

Notting Hill.
Stardust.
The Princess Bride.
When Harry Met Sally.
Casablanca (okay, so it’s my feel-good movie)
Wall-E
Beauty and the Beast
Finding Nemo
Shaun of the Dead
Clue

I put my strongest recommendations in bold.

Singin’ In the Rain is my “go-to” feel good picture. Also, any Gene Kelly movie, or any screwball comedy starring Cary Grant. Or a Preston Sturges-directed screwball comedy. Ooh, or Auntie Mame. “Life’s a banquet and some poor suckers are starving to death!”

I like the old pictures. And Cary Grant, Gene Kelly and Joel McCrea (who was in a number of Sturges movies) are very nice to look at!

@Marina – I watched Made of Honor last night. I thought it had some great moments in it (like the potpourri thing). It was enjoyable. Definitely a feel-good movie.

Lurve for Shawshank!!!!

Why do they call you Red? Maybe it’s because I’m Irish. . .

Priceless

Little Miss Sunshine? A brilliantly caustic comedy about a young girl’s unlikely journey to a beauty pageant and her dysfunctional family going along with her. Incredibly witty and human and not in that drippy, braindead way that I find hard to stomach but still touches the cackles of my robot heart.

just reading the question, my first answer would have been je t’aime paris, but then i read that you specifically don’t want to read subtitles, so that’s out of the question.

my next recommendation: house bunny. no deep meaning, no subtitles, light hearted, and i think it’s cute. is that a ridiculous recommendation? maybe. but it’s my new favourite chick flick.

Kids & Happiness are real gems too. Fun for the whole family!

Role Models- I expected it to be stupid but it was really funny.

@shockvalue, living up to your screen name I see!

okay, real answers… Babe, Amélie, Kiki’s Delivery Service. Finding Neverland. Benny & Joon.

@tiffyandthewall I sat down to House Bunny expecting a vaguely entertaining distraction but thought it was a gem! It’s the completely weird non sequiturs that just pop it out of a conventional, bland story that one would expect. Great suggestion.
