Can we post videos on Fluther?

Asked by Jiminez (1253points) March 22nd, 2009

What about pictures? Links? I’m another newbie to Fluther from Wis.dm. There will be many of us, I’m sure.

[mod says:] You can link to videos and pictures in your profile or in appropriate threads. But there isn’t really an outlet on the site to upload content, if that is what you mean. If you want to discuss videos/show images etc, you can upload them in the chat room and people will see them automatically due to the chat room format. Also, if the image/video you are linking to is “adult content”, be sure to put a warning of “NSFW” next to the link. NSFW = not safe for work

What’s wis.dm?

Jiminez's avatar

@PnL what I mean is: if I post an embed code in the “details” section, will it show up there so people can watch it? What about in the comment sections?

@La_chica_gomela it’s a website that’s closing down. It was very dear to many of us. But it’s closing down, so we’re all coming to Fluther.

@Jiminez It won’t show up. In my opinion that is a good thing.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

why is it closing?

Jiminez's avatar

@johnpowell Why is that a good thing? I mean, every site is different, but I think that would be handy.

@La_chica_gomela A myriad of reasons, I’m sure. It wasn’t profitable I guess… This place seems fun though…

It is fun.

It’s a good thing that videos don’t just show up and start playing here because it makes the site cleaner and keeps it running faster, as well as not annoying me or posting videos that were NSFW or otherwise obscene without giving the user as choice as to whether they want to see it or not.

The way that things are, you can post a link to a video, and other users can choose to click on it or not to. I think it’s a pretty good system.

One of the things I like about Fluther is it’s clean and simple interface like @La_chica_gomela pointed out.

Actually I was curious about this “wis.dom” site Jimenez mentioned, so I googled it, and went and checked it out. I actually thought there was something wrong with my internet connection because it was so slow, but when I went to other sites, I realized it was just wis.dom, and then I found this question: http://wis.dm/scenes/7-the-supposium/questions/677121-holy-macaroni-has-the-wiz-ever-ever-been-this-slow-and-unresponsive

asking if the site had ever been that slow before, and 82% of people said yes. I don’t know if they let you upload video content, but I will say that it really made me appreciate fluther, and how fast it runs.

@La_chica_gomela :: we were talking about how slow the site was in the chatroom. I wouldn’t have stuck around if it was always like that.

And you can post a video here if you want. You just can’t embed them.

You can just link to it in a question, answer or comment. That gives people the option to watch/view it, or not.

Interesting. Welcome, wise people!

@johnpowell – I’m confused. Are you also on wis.dm or were you referring to the fluther chatroom?

jlm11f's avatar

@La_chica_gomela – he was referring to the fluther chatroom.

Love the vid JP—especially Hammer’s mom in the background knitting!!!

@La_chica_gomela

Yeah wis.dm has been really slow lately. It’s on it’s last leg. It wasn’t always like that, though. And I’m sure it has nothing (or very little) to do with the videos and pictures posted on there. It’s just due to a lack of maintenance.

@shadling21

Hey thanks! We’ll try to live up to our name.

No need for an embed code. Everyone knows that red links are external content.
