What offends you? What would you call obscene?

Asked by daloonagain (628points) March 23rd, 2009

What offends one person, another might be saying “Wha…?” Where one person might find pornography obscene, another might find Geore Bush obscene (or at least to have acted in an obscene manner). After you say what is offensive, please try to define your sense of offense, or obscenity.

What offends me is the mutulation of the language, using thirty words where five would do nicely, spelling horrors, ignorance of homonyms, and creative or artistic use of punctuation and upper case (and repeating myself).

I find nothing obscene..just boring.

edit: I agree with Harmony about rape.

HarmonyAlexandria's avatar

Other than rape depictions, I’m pretty much unoffendble

I’m not easily offended, but I do seem to be offended when people don’t believe me when I say something about my own life; when people claim (random people on the internet) that they know more about me than I know about myself. I also am offended by derogatory comments against my family.

Sometimes I find our legal system offensive here in the United States because it can seem very unbalanced and unfair to victims when it comes to handing down sentences to the criminals in a lot of cases.

I find child and spousal abuse extremely offensive because I’ve never understood the motivation for someone to abuse women or children for any reason at all.

I find elements of American politics offensive in the way that many politicians are hypocritical in their actions and they have very little if no integrity and altruistic leanings toward anyone or anything.

As far as something being obscene? How about the terrible misuse of taxpayers money by the government?

aprilsimnel's avatar

This war and others like it are obscene. It’s a blatant attempt at profiteering and controlling the natural resources of another country.

Any abuse of children is obscene. Why would anyone hurt the defenceless?

A place like Guantanamo or the black prisons are obscene. Holding people without due process violates their rights as human beings to face their accusers. Torturing people is obscene.

I find many forms of violence obscene, really, seeing how it’s grounded in the attempt to control another person.

The only thing that really offends me is perverse people who get thrills out of being hurtful. And not sarcastic, dark or witty but when they know that it is damaging they get a thrill out of it. In other words-psychotic.

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

im pretty easy going, it takes a lot to offend me.

StellarAirman's avatar

I’m offended by people that are too easily offended.

essieness's avatar

Racism offends me, even though I’m usually not on the receiving end of the comments. It’s just uncalled for.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

Cruelty for its own sake is pretty damned offensive. Other than that, I am pretty difficult to offend.

Zaku's avatar

Yes, G.W. Bush as president was a good example.
annoying advertising
laws I disagree with (such as those bought by corporations, those limiting freedom and infringing on privacy and human dignity)
abuse and destruction of plants and animals and their habitats by insensitive humans and corporations
huge wastes of resources and human time and attention on poor-quality wasteful commercial products, bad entertainment, pointless media stories, etc.
truthspeak and other realizations of Orwellian nightmares

The theme has to do with being greatly disappointed in my culture and my country and my species, comparing the heights of what is possible for them, to the depths of what they sometimes do instead.

augustlan's avatar

I don’t think many (any?) things are obscene. Offensive? That’s another story… Bigotry of any kind. Abuse of anyone. Hateful, hurtful, harmful people. Trolls. Brussels Sprouts.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@augustlan why are Brussel Sprouts offensive?

augustlan's avatar

Just joshin’. Though I really don’t like them!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

Ah, I see. And here I was all ready to send your name to the Brussel Sprouts Anti-Defamation League. You dodged a bullet there.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

Pretty much everything is fair game for me. I’m candid about everything, and I mean everything. In my apartment, my roommates and I have “Daily drugs, alcohol, and sex talks with Tits,” which is pretty much anytime that my roommates have questions about something, and I spout out knowledge, no holds barred. This ranges from how to make pot brownies to what getting your red wings means… nothing’s too vulgar for me!

Garebo's avatar

Today, any belief system, or issue that goes counter to the status quo is pursued as obscene.

augustlan's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra Don’t let MacBean see you leaving off the ‘s’ in Brussels… she’ll report you to the league!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@augustlan being Belgian, and originally from Brussels, I can get away with it, it’s a geneological right. And I thought MacBean was a dude.

augustlan's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra MacBean has girl parts, and a boy brain.

@Garebo: Pursued = perceived?

nebule's avatar

someone eating their own faeces would offend me if they were doing it in a public place

Garebo's avatar

Pursued, with a vengence!

gailcalled's avatar

@lynneblundell: You see that often in your ‘hood?

LouisianaGirl's avatar

anything stupid just drives me crazy and especially when people think its funny

gailcalled's avatar

@LouisianaGirl : Give us some examples. “Stupid” and “funny” are very subjective, as you know.

Blondesjon's avatar

Censorship.

@gailcalled…“Spelling Horrors” sounds like a niche porn title to me.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

like when people pick their nose or pass gas or burp or something just for attention and some people find it funny so they keep doing it. I understand if it was an accident but to do it intentionally that just makes me mad.

gailcalled's avatar

@Blondesjon: I bequeath it to you. Have a good time.

Blondesjon's avatar

@gailcalled…Why thank you, and I meant it sounds like a Nietzsche porn title to me.

changes the whole flavor of the answer a bit

nebule's avatar

@gailcalled lol…no…it’s just the most offensive thing I could think of that hasn’t already been said :-)

gailcalled's avatar

@lynneblundell: That’s a relief; in my experience (limited, I know) occasionally long ago one of the toddlers I hung around w. tried it, once. My son, as a 2 yr old, did finger paint a wall with diaper contents (once, also.)

gailcalled's avatar

@Blondesjon; Spelling Nietzsche right is an accomplishment. (Did you peek?)

Blondesjon's avatar

@gailcalled…A wise man always checks his work.

YARNLADY's avatar

In general, I am offended by people who choose to use socially unacceptable words to create emphasis, showing that they do not respect their reader or themselves enough to use choose from the multitide of socially acceptable words that available. Such short-sightedness is appalling.

Blondesjon's avatar

@Yarnlady…I must respectfully disagree.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Yarnlady
What’s a socially unacceptable word in this day and age? I think it’s intent rather than actual words. Although it is often an indicator of a breakdown in true communication.
It’s a fine line which only I understand. :)

YARNLADY's avatar

@Blondesjon How is it possible for you to disagree with my own opinion? you know what I am offended by better than I do?
@seventhSense Whenever a person chooses to use a scatological or any other word for it’s shock value, as opposed to it’s actual meaning.

Blondesjon's avatar

@Yarnlady…My humblest and most heartfelt apologies. I have forgotten the faces of my fathers.

SeventhSense's avatar

@Yarnlady
But let’s not forget that scatalogical humor is some of the funniest. Who has not sat in a church, library or classroom and not erupted into uproarious laughter upon hearing a distinct fart intrude upon the silence? And it’s such an equalizer for those who think that “their shite does not stink”. Yea shite is the great equalizer. :)

YARNLADY's avatar

@SeventhSense a fine line, indeed.

oratio's avatar

Any kind of abuse of children. My body goes numb when I see or hear of the things people do to kids. I have a son, 3 years old.

BBQsomeCows's avatar

you

DO NOT

have the right

to be not-offended

welcome to free speech

SeventhSense's avatar

@BBQsomeCows
For some reason that statement seems more Fascist than democratic. ~-~

SABOTEUR's avatar

Boys, young men and “old-enough-to-know-better” men wearing pants so low around the waist that their ass sticks out.

I’ve come to begrudging accept that it’s fashionable with young people.

I just don’t understand why a male would want his rear end exposed.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

I could say what I deem to be obscene, however as many say they are not offended would be offended by what I feel is obscene. Some of those ”not easily offended people” might just result to flagging as a de facto method of censoring the answer because they won’t like it or want to label it something it is not.
