Do you read other people's responses before you answer Fluther questions?

Asked by BBSDTfamily (6839points) April 6th, 2009

Just wondering…. I make it a point not to read anyone else’s opinions before I write my own…. I just assume people who ask questions want our individual opinions and not a mass of people agreeing with the first post.

Depends on the circumstances, like right now I’m not reading any previous posts.

gailcalled's avatar

Always, so I don’t repeat something said by someone else.

Nope…I just try to respond as fast as possible so I can be first to repspond haha

Yes, I read them all, and often I see a different slant on the question than I got out of my first reading. I hate giving the first response unless I have a strong opinion, or know the subject well.

I try not to repeat like @gailcalled said, but if I think my answer is totally unique, I’ll just skip to the chase and find out I repeated later on.

I don’t like to repeat an answer to a question looking for something specific if a member has already given the correct response, just like @gailcalled said. To make sure I don’t do this, it is necessary for me to look over previous responses.

If it is an opinion based question, I’m comfortable not reading over previous answers because even though my response might be similar to something already offered, it is my own individual, unique perspective on something and that’s worth sharing.

It depends if there are a lot of short ones. Then I will. But lately I find myself passing on the long ones or the long questions.

I try to disipline myself and at least scan the other responses. I didn’t do this in the past. After over a year on Fluther I’m still trying to be good, and it ain’t easy.

I really hate it when I see person after person saying the same thing. I’m pretty sure they haven’t read the other answers before posting. It’s pretty lame.

@MrGeneVan You were too slow this time.

cak's avatar

Usually, yes. Today I got to a question and saw 99 responses. I am not even going to pretend that I read all of the responses.

I really hate it when…ahh, forget it.

jrpowell's avatar

I’m lazy. No need to repeat what has already been said.

YARNLADY's avatar

It leads to a better discussion if people read the responses first, and then add to the body of knowledge. Otherwise, it can degenerate into just plain nonsense.

Depends on the question.. if it’s some lame question about something .. well.. lame.. then I just throw out a lame answer and move on.. If the subject warrants further investigation then I read the other responses.

Did I mention that I really hate it when I see person after person saying the same thing. I’m pretty sure they haven’t read the other answers before posting. It’s pretty lame? I hope not. I didn’t read my last answer before I wrote it!

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@daloon You inspired me. =) What can I say?

Zen's avatar

Unless I’m first, then yes, as I wouldn’t want to write the same thing as someone. Oops, forgot. What @gailcalled wrote.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I always read first. But I pass on the loooong ones. They get to rambling.

gailcalled's avatar

As the response list grows, I skip also what I consider the off-topic stuff. Sometimes I can guess what it is just from the avatar. I would suggest also that you don’t need to say “thanks” over and over, unless, of course, it is written in Finnish.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Yes. If someone said essentially what I’d say, I just give some lurve and move on.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

sometimes. if i don’t have a lot of information already, i’ll scan/read others’ responses. if it’s a quick question (like this) i often answer without reading responses (but i’ll usually go back to read the answers). if there are really extensive answers, i don’t always read them, but i usually make an effort to at least scan them.

MooKoo's avatar

Used to, but then I realized that’s what keeps me on this site waaay longer than I need to be. So now, I respond, and follow the topic from there on out. It saves me a lot of time and if it’s a good enough question there will be responses to my answer and good answers to com afterwards as well, so I still get that experience of reading all the question in a round-a-bout way really.

I really wish people would. I do.

YARNLADY's avatar

I really wish people would. I do (see what happens when you don’t?)

hivemindharvester's avatar

I just read them rougly, then answer – time is precious :)

Though I havent thought about people wanting individual opinions in forums or fluther. Good point.

wilbert's avatar

unless they are responding to me personally I don’t care

wilbert's avatar

haven’t been here long enough, but if they do, will say goodday, and by this, I mean good day

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

Sometimes, but if there are a lot of answers, like over 20, I won’t read them.
