A curious question about Fluther lurve and Great Answers (and the subconscious)...

Asked by Saturated_Brain (5235points) August 13th, 2009

I don’t know whether it’s just me, but it seems like in answers to questions, whenever someone points out that another answer is a GA, there is a higher tendency for people to go and actually click on the ‘Great Answer’ link.

It’s happened to me before; I’m just reading the answers, going along minding my own business, then I see an answer which has 5 GAs. I think to myself, “Oh, that’s quite a lot of lurve there.” and move on. Then I see another person referencing back to that answer, stating that it’s a GA (you know, for example ”@evenlyns_facade_heretic Lurve for that honey. If I could I’d give you 10 GAs for that”). Upon reading this, something in my head seems to click and I actually consciously go back to that answer and reread it, and more often than not give it a GA myself, thinking “Aww they’re right, it is a GA. I should recognise it by giving it a GA”.

Does this only happen to me? Or is it some subconscious things which happens to everyone, something like a herd mentality situation?

(And if this is true, think of the potential implications! rubs hands together evilly *)

Most of the time i recognise a Good Answer (GA) when i see one.
They might be funny ones, or pointing-me-away-from-my-own-opinion ones.
But, yes, occasionaly i give some lurve after a re-read.

I’m not influenced by another jelly pointing out a post that struck them as a GA, but I read all the posts and give my lurve freely and liberally. GQ, by the way I hope that helps, you lurve whore…but hey, that’s coming from the #1 lurve slut! See ya…..Gary aka wtf aka lurve slut

I’ve noticed this too. Here’s what I think happens: people get so into reading the threads, just scanning through the answers, that leaving lurve kind of gets forgotten. Seeing someone else mention lurve reminds them of that part of the process, and the first thing they do is go back to the answer that just got referenced, now primed to click.

When i re read a post due to someone pointing it out i might give lurve , but if it wasn’t good enough the 1st time i read it i don’t give lurve i just re read it :) .

No i dont tend to do that. I find myself clicking on the answers that make me laugh or smile or think, “gee i really wish i wrote that – its exactly what i wanted to say!!” Then i give GA’s…

but then again, im not much of a team player

Personally I don’t do that, I usually give lurve to answers that grab my attention straight away.

Often times I will go back and re-read an answer if someone has posted about it.. but I still only give GA if I truly think it deserves it.

jonsblond's avatar

I usually don’t do this. Like @Leanne1986 I only give lurve if it grabs my attention. I do find it interesting when someone says “GA” but then they don’t give lurve. What’s up with that?

sandystrachan's avatar

Maybe they just forget to click , or they think typing “GA” makes it go there right away .

When you click GA does it send you back tothe top of the thread to thank you? It did this to me several times when ‘GAing’ answers on a long thread… it drove me mad having to find the last place I was at each time!

I don’t always give lurve to a referenced GA if I didn’t like the answer but sometimes I
re- read a thread at a later date after other answers have been given, and give lurve.

I just got a GA for an answer that read, in its entirety; “Edit: fine.” That seems plain silly.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@sakura That has never happened to me.

Malcrony's avatar

I find myself clicking GA to only those I read once and thought their a GA, cause if not I’ll end up read a one that someone said was a GA but question myself for the clicking of the link and Yeah… takes over half my day Lol

But to add to the experimentation of the thing
@rebbel That’s pretty much how I am, Good Answer man.

I give out lurve left and right… except to those flutherites I’m secretly competing with.

@Saturated_Brain. I’m subconsciously giving you lurve for a GQ here. Please submit an answer so I can give you lurve for that also. =)

There’s a lot of bandwagon lurve-ing. It’s not that subconscious.

i think you kind of think, “hm. it must have really been something special if someone pointed it out!” and then you look back, and with your mind acknowledging that someone else called it out, you probably read it as funnier/more awesome than you would have before.

Saturated_Brain's avatar

@Bluefreedom Aww shyucks. I gave you a GA too =P

By the way, would it work if I now went “GAs everyone! If I could I’d give you a gazillion GAs!”

After giving out all that lurve freely, I feel like a slut for some reason..

whatthefluther's avatar

@Saturated_Brain…Don’t worry….you won’t feel like a slut for long. Lurve will soothe all that ails you. Watch….I’ll give you a GA….see that didn’t hurt a bit, did it? Now reciprocate dammit! Thanking you in advance….Gary aka wtf

Saturated_Brain's avatar

@whatthefluther You made me reciprocate! Argh.. I’ve gotten the Lurve STD!

Malcrony's avatar

@Saturated_Brain If only that were true, the sad truth is there’s no Cure for LTD… s’ok I’ll take a couple of Lurves and go down to funky town with you.

avvooooooo's avatar

I forget to click many times. I get to reading and just keep going without stopping to click on GA. If someone reminds me, its more likely that I’ll end up clicking.
