it can buy a jetski. and you can’t NOT smile on a jetski.

Depends on how materialistic you are.

I don’t care too much for money ‘cuz money can’t buy me Lurve.

I actually know the answer to this question. For 11 years out of my 60, I was very, very wealthy. Well, it was my wife’s money, but I was able to behave as though it were mine.

I was miserable for 7 of those 11 years. The rest of my life I have been financially marginal, up and down, but never rich, and now I am frankly penurious: I’m an unemployed college student, and I am very, very happy.

Temporarily, maybe.

It can buy you a convertable, and who can’t NOT smile while driving a convertable?

lloydbird's avatar

If it can’t, then there is no point to it.

jaketheripper's avatar

It can distract you from your emptiness but it doesn’t actually make you happy

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chyna joke thief… ;)~

Syger's avatar

To a degree, yes. You can’t argue that.
@eponymoushipster ; what comedian did that? I know I’ve heard it somewhere before.

dpworkin's avatar

@Syger I just did argue with that.

lloydbird's avatar

@pdworkin No you did’nt!

jonsblond's avatar

No. Temporary happiness in not true happiness.

DarkScribe's avatar

Sure. For the people who own the businesses where you spend it.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

This answer is easy. “No.”

Material possessions do not bring lasting happiness.

@Syger I can and will argue that. Successfully too.

SuperMouse's avatar

No, but I hear it can buy the Brooklyn Bridge.

When I had more money than I do now (like @pdworkin I am a non-traditional college student), I felt kind of like I was a slave to my stuff. I was terrified that if the money went away the stuff would go with it and I was tense about it all the time. Now I don’t have the money, I still have some of the stuff, and I seem to be slowly purging all of it. Here’s what I learned – money can buy you stuff. Stuff can’t buy you happiness.

…especially credit cards 

Parrappa's avatar

It can, it just depends on the type of person you are. It can’t buy everybody happiness, but it can for some.

Sampson's avatar

Money can buy cheese, though…

ratboy's avatar

Yes—but due to antiquated US laws, you must order it from Canadian pharmacies.

XOIIO's avatar

@sampson
Look Grommit! Cheese!

Money can certainly allow you to be happy. I’m not sure if that’s “buying happiness”, but I’m sure that people who are dirt poor and can’t afford a place to live are most likely not too happy. Money bringing happiness isn’t necessarily just with Maseratis and iPhones. Even the most basic things you need money to have.

For example, listening to music makes me very happy. In order to have recordings of music, I need money. In order to get instruments to play music, I need money. So it can definitely indirectly lead to things that make you happy.

Everyone has their own experiences and thinks they can turn it into a universal statement, but I don’t really think they can. Just because some people didn’t enjoy being wealthy doesn’t mean all wealthy people are miserable, just as not all poor people are miserable. It’s not the case at all.

rooeytoo's avatar

I don’t think anything can buy happiness.

But if I am going to be miserable and unhappy anyhow, I’d just as soon be rich while I am.

DominicX's avatar

Here’s another thing I don’t understand: happiness is happiness. There’s no such thing as “real happiness”. Any happiness is real. It might not be lasting, but it’s still real. If something that came from money made you happy, then money caused happiness in you. It can’t get much more basic than that…

Starcruizah's avatar

No, money could buy security!

efritz's avatar

Money can prevent misery. But I think it can only make you so happy – it affords certain possibilities, but not everything can be bought. Obviously.

jonsblond's avatar

This is one of my favorite quotes that I like to live by:

We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

Money can buy you temporary happiness, but it’s just a band aid for underlying issues.

doggywuv's avatar

Money can buy goods/services which can give you happiness. So, yes, indirectly.

DarkScribe's avatar

It might not buy happiness, but it sure can rent it for a while.

The only constant that money brings is security, and that alleviates worry and anxiety, which is a move toward happiness.

cwilbur's avatar

Money can eliminate obstacles to happiness, and it can kill the pain of unhappiness. But it can’t buy happiness directly.

himanshuagarwal101's avatar

No, I think we cannot buy happiness from money. I agree money is the most important thing for run our life but it doesn’t mean, money is everything in our life. Because many things we cannot buy from money like feelings, relationships, family members and love. But there are plenty of things we can get by money like mobile, car, house, bungalow etc. Therefore, we can say that, “we can only buy assets by money which can give us some happiness.
