Is it ok to name a child Cartman?

Asked by johanna (895points) October 19th, 2009

Good friends of mine love the name Cartman and would like to name their son Cartman. Do you think that the negative implications are, due to South Park, too strong? I mean that Cartman is quite the little as, albeit a funny as.
Also, do you know anyone named Cartman?
If not Cartman, can you think of any other nice sounding?

Sure. Just ask @cartman here how he feels.

But there are far worse things one could call a child, n’est ce pas?

YES!!! BEST CHOICE EVER!!!

Who would not be proud to bear such a name? Truly a badge of honour, the stamp of the prodigy and a testament to the greatness of children! Why do you even waver or, if I may say it myself, flutter? You go girl!!!

Yes, I could ask but somehow I do not believe our Fluther Cartman is actually called Cartman. Neither do I believe you actually go by the name Newzen, regardless how pretty a name it is…

(It’s a play on News Man and of course, my recently departed nickname, Zen)

Well, it sure beats Moon Unit or some of the other crazy names out there, so why not? The kid will probably get teased about it in school but then again, kids will find something to tease about anyway. they always do!

I think it is stupid to name someone for life with a name that is so strongly associated with one time and one show. I have never heard it as a name anywhere else and I think it would be a liability all through life.

First of all, I think Moon is a cool name. Frank Zappa gave it enough thought I am sure, he knew his child would be able to handle being called ‘Moon’.

Cart-man. No. Not cool. Does not roll of the tongue. Is not a visual attractive arrangement of letters. Not only, does the name Cartman make me think of, a cartoon, of a fat kinder-gardener, but also of some sick science experiment gone bizarre creating a half carriage, half man thing that lurks out in abandoned parking lots of old shopping markets! Beware of the Cartman!

So with that said, I hope you’ve got the negative amount of feedback you needed to change your mind.

Just name your kid “Seven”, it’s good for a boy or a girl.

Not a good idea. I grew up with a nickname (Archie) that was associated with a cartoon character, and a television bigot. I know about such things.
A few years ago, I ran into a woman who had two sons, Eric and Kyle. I told her NOT to name her next kid Kenny, and she was completely oblivious to what I was saying.
I like the name Desmond. Go with that.

Just don’t name the child Butters. :P

I think it’s silly to not name a child just because of a tv show. As long as she isn’t using the name because of that, which would be weird…then who cares. If she likes it then go for it.

That being said, when I was visiting friends of a friend (with my friend) they showed me their daughters room and her name was on the wall and it said “Rachel” I didn’t think much of it. And then that night I found out their last name was Green. I said to my friend “Oh my god, like Rachel Green from Friends!” He had NO clue what I was talking about, and mentioned it to his friends and they didn’t know either! WTH, I thought everyone had at least seen one or two episodes of Friends.
So yes, there might always be a connotation…most names have them though. Until the hurricane, I had people singing “walking on sunshine” to me all the time.

They really want to name their kid Cartman?
Damn. People can be so fucking stupid.

gottamakeart's avatar

tell them please don’t. and nothing involving “jr.” either. maybe they should just stick to pets.

J0E's avatar

Yeah, I guess it’s “okay” but I hope they have a good reason because god knows their kid is going to ask “why the hell did you name me Cartman!?”

Likeradar's avatar

Sure, it’s a great name if they want people to think of South Park every time the kid’s name is said.
IMHO, some names just have too strong a connotation attached to them. It would be like naming a kid Barack, Oprah, or Madonna. There’s just no getting around what people will think of. If they’re ok with that, fine. But they really need to think about how the kid will feel about the name.

I think it would be shitty of them.

wildpotato's avatar

No. But Cartman is Cartman’s last name, actually – your friends could go with the chatacter’s first name, Eric, if they really want to reference the show.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Why not just name your kid Anonymous or No Name Given or Unknown, like the rest of the idiots trying to come up with something “unique”???

Sarcasm's avatar

Are they naming him Cartman because of Eric Cartman on South Park? Or do they like the name for another reason? You really don’t say.

I don’t know anyone named Cartman. I’d think it’s safe to assume that for the most part, it’s a surname.

There certainly are weirder names. Like, you know, Falcon.

deni's avatar

I don’t think Cartman is an odd name at all. It seems fairly normal…unusual, but nothing like Isosceles, Falcon, Soda, Apple…the only fans I’m not a name of are those that are inanimate objects. Celebrities are pretty good at coming up with dumb ass names for their kids.

SuperMouse's avatar

No, it is not ok to name a child Cartman. Unless of course you are a celebrity, then anything goes.

loser's avatar

You just know that poor kid is gonna get teased. Especially if he happens to ever gain weight in his lifetime. Can you talk to them or show them this thread?

DominicX's avatar

@Sarcasm Man, I am so sick of that stupid “balloon boy” story; I can’t believe there’s a whole Wikipedia article dedicated to it…poor kid is going to be known as the “balloon boy” for the rest of his life! http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=balloon+boy

I don’t think it’s right to name a child anything that you realistically know will get them made fun of or otherwise give them unwanted attention. Celebrities just do it because they want attention. And guess what? We give it to them, so they’re getting what they want out of it.

LuhvKiller's avatar

I think it would be a tickin time bomb to name ur child that. Ur just askin for them to get teased at school. I would name my puppy cartman…Thats cute but not a baby.

Adagio's avatar

I’ve never heard the name Cartman before I don’t own a TV so maybe that explains why? it’s not a name I would want to use for a child.

Hannannah's avatar

Yeah! He would get made fun of but I think it’s acute name!
