Do you believe in superstitions?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) October 19th, 2009

I ask because my lurve just hit 666. I consider myself a very skeptical person, but that still made me feel a little jumpy. Maybe there are some things that are just so ingrained that we can’t help feeling nervous. In Chinese, four and death have the same sound but they’re spoken in a different tone. So a lot of the time buildings will be numbered with floors one, two, three, five, etc. Even if you’re a skeptical person, do you find yourself sometimes following superstitions, “just in case?”

No, I am an atheist. I don’t believe in in any other superstitions either.

(When I was a kid I kissed the Blarney Stone. All I got was grit in my teeth.)

Well, I won’t walk under a black cat and I am afraid to have a ladder cross my path, but other than that, naw, superstitions are for the gullible.

I can’t help it. My parents are old country irish! I never tell anybody but my sisters are the same way. My left hand itches, its a good money day. My handbag can never touch the floor. When that black raven flies in front of the car when we pull out, I say nothing. I’ve grown out of most of them but….I can’t help meself!

I have been working on my Master’s Thesis for three and a half years. If has been a horrible, hard, arduous journey filled with failed classes, tears, mistakes and problems. It is all boiling down to the final step, the “Day of Days”: Defense Day. My defense day is November 13 of this year. It is a Friday. No, I’m not superstitious. ;-)

@The_Compassionate_Heretic Nice!

Maybe I didn’t phrase my question very well. Most people are probably skeptics; that’s an easy one. Do you ever find yourself thinking/ doing superstitious things, against your better judgement? I was pretty surprised that this bothered me.

I have these duck underwears. Whenever I wear them, I have a great day.

Yes absolutely.

In Billiards, I never break my own rack. The Pool Gods would never forgive me.

Not usually, but when I am watching sports, I tend to have some very strange habits.

Only spilling salt. I always throw some over my shoulder.

That’s not true, I also worry about tempting fate with absolute/tempting statements and make sure to knock on wood (or it’s closest relative) when I slip up or feel an absolute statement is necessary.

Not that I really believe in either of those… **knock, knock

No, not at all but I do carry a red handbag because that is supposed to attract money.

shego's avatar

@cyndihugs I like them I have never seen a pair like that before.
I knock on wood when I know that I am going to jinx myself.

cyn's avatar

@XOIIO They’re on the ground. I’m not going to show my half naked body just to show them off.
Especially online! (:

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@cyndihugs thank you, I am now a believer. I wonder if they come in my size, they are kind of cute. =)

cyn's avatar

@Psychedelic_Zebra I bought them at Mervyn’s. (:

At least you people dont have to survive through Poland. The land of superstitions! i learn a new one every time i visit family, and the whole village gawks at my silly mistakes. (they rushed me to a hospital because i ate fruit with water! it can kill you!)

shego's avatar

@Alek2407 lol that is funny. What other ones really get you?

Alek2407's avatar

milk + meat + poison
cold surfaces (sitting on them kills you)
putting ice in hot beverages (makes them go bad)
black cats (you have to do this special prayer)
anti-thunder holy candles (yup they have anti-thunder candles which they bess!)
baptism of the cars (they do this like ounce a year, really bad traffic with priest on the roads throwing holy water)
and worst of all… Deadly Drafts!!!!!! (as in wind in a house can kill you)

they are really superstitious and they all are terrified when i break them, and modern polish society allows most of these to be routine.

shego's avatar

@Alek2407 I just learned something new. interesting

@Alek2407 At least you people dont have to survive through Poland.

My first Mother-in-Law was Polish. When we bought our first house and furnished it, we were quite pleased. A couple of days later we came home to find our brand new refrigerator gone, and another brand new one was in its place. My MIL had it dumped and replaced with a new one with mechanical door locks. She believed that the first one – with magnetic door locks – would attract lightning.

No. But people who are superstitious in a positive way can benefit from the placebo effect.

Everyone needs to have something to believe in. I believe I’ll have another beer.
