I have seen countless ads on Tv and the internet(mortgage companies, credit card companies, night schools etc,etc,..which use Obama’s likeness and policies as a marketing tool,. e.g Obama asks single mother to go back to school,Obama signs a new stimulus bill, take advantage of our products/services:is he the first president to be repeatedly used by companies peddling their goods.

From the New Yorker

The American craving for Lincoln soon led to the use of his likeness and name to sell life insurance, cholera remedies, and lead (“By Its Purity & Excellent Qualities This Lead Deserves The Name Bestowed Upon It”). Children began playing with Lincoln Logs, invented by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, and, in a telling trivialization, during the 1909 centennial the Waterman Company’s new no-dip Lincoln Fountain Pen guaranteed “the emancipation of millions of slaves to the ink bottle.”

I have seen him used for credit re-building companies.

Do you mean the companies that make the posters, t-shirts and chintzy rhinestone watches is see being sold on the street that bear his likeness and name?

I’ve seen those types of ads online and I’ve heard a few on the radio that are almost as stupid. Many of them take the “Obama is going to eat your freedoms for breakfast” angle. They’re really annoying, but I doubt that it’s the first time this has happened before.

@proXXi NO, as I said car/home insurance companies,online schools,mortgage companies etc,etc,

Gotcha.

I would assume these companies are betting on Obama’s popularity regardless of his policy.

Just like his campaign staff.

RACISM! I am a proud owner of the Obama bronze bust, the Obama Chia Head, have a full set of the Obama coins, and I expect my “Obama as Jesus on Velvet” any day now. But I have not seen anyone taking advantage of his popularity to make money or peddle worthless crap.

Grisaille's avatar

Definitely not the first, but since Obama is ridiculously popular, such a surge in branding is expected.

The examples of Lincoln and Washington were after they left office. I’m curious to know if any sitting president has ever been used for marketing purposes.

it is what America does, it could market communism wholesale and make a profit, i swear to God, in fact it could market God, Osama Bin Laden, AIDS, Hell, Global warming, any damn thing you like.

Fluthermucker's avatar

@mammal I beg to differ…I tried to buy and sell the Osama Bin Laden bronze bust, the Osama Bin Laden Chia Head, the full set of the Osama Bin Laden coins, and the “Osama Bin Laden as Jesus on Velvet” to no avail…some things just don’t have a market in the USSA – (United Socialist States of Amerika).

So apparently…communism does not sell. Maybe when the next wave of government spending kicks in.

New York A billboard featuring President Obama that was erected three days ago will be coming down, according to a spokesman for the company that paid for the outdoor ad in Times Square…

…Company spokesman Allen Cohen on Friday said the ads will be removed “in an expeditious manner” after what he described as a cordial conversation late Thursday with White House counsel Kendall Burman, who requested their prompt removal.
