How are contestants chosen to "come on down" on The Price is Right?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) March 28th, 2010

I have been an avid viewer of The Price Is Right for many years. i understand that a person has to request tickets, just to be in the audience. but, from this point on, how is one person selected over another, to “come on down”, to actually play the game? are the names drawn from a hat? it appears that the chosen people are a good cross -representation of the culture mixture of America. so, how do they do it? what makes one person stand out to be chosen over the rest of the audience?

I have never seen “The Price is Right” but in other quiz, competition shows, those who are interested fill in a psych/profile questionnaire and go into a draw based on those results.

I’m not familiar with their actual protocol, but I’m pretty sure it depends on the depth and breadth of their education and erudition. Published Dons first, then Oxford debaters, then Harvard and other Ivy League schools, unless someone has done something of particular distinction in life, then they get honorary come-on-down passes.

I had a friend appear on the show (she won a washer and dryer). She said that staff members spend time with the audience before the show, wandering and chatting amongst them, and taking notes. I assume they then meet up backstage, compare notes, and decide who will make for interesting and varied contestants. They probably have “roles” they are casting for, as not every contestant can be a Screamer, and they don’t want them all to be Shrewd, either.

It was before my time, so I really woudn’t know. (Wait – is it really still on?)

@janbb, yes, it’s hosted by the comedian Drew Carey. I’ve seen an episode recently. I didn’t like it as much as I did the new Let’s Make A Deal hosted by Wayne Brady.

Bob Barker was the best.

Before the show i think they fill out a survey and get put in for a drawing, after they draw there names and who ever gets called gets to “Come on down”

I’ve been in the audience twice but didn’t get called down either time which makes me so sad. Before you go in to the studio (during the TWELVE HOUR WAIT) they interview each person and ask about what you do, where you’re from, anything interesting we should know about you? It’s short. I don’t know how they pick, really, but I guess it has to do with whoever seems eccentric and fun and lively.

Hmmph.

They have either given Bob Barker head or promised to do same…
