Americans still watching the World Cup - rooting for or against Ghana?

Asked by MrItty (17406points) July 2nd, 2010

If you’re an American and still watching the World Cup even after the USA team’s departure from the tournament, who are you rooting for in this afternoon’s game? Are you rooting for Ghana, as the team worthy enough to beat us? Or are you rooting against Ghana for Uruguay, out of anger or bitterness for our defeat?

Although I like both Uruguay and Ghana, I think I will be rooting for Ghana. I have a thing for that country, despite never having visited it. I admire the fact that it is more developed than most west African countries, a relative of mine studied abroad there and I found it fascinating to hear about what she experienced, and I love hiplife/highlife music (a genre of music unique to Ghana). So go Ghana! :)

I’m not really a big soccer fan, so my reasons for supporting the team may not match many others’. ;)

Uruguay. Our hemisphere. I was cheering on Brazil too, but alas.

Well. Uruguay defeated Korea. For that, they deserve to be punished. So in this specific matchup, I’m hoping Ghana wins.

However. Ghana defeated the US. For that, they deserve to be punished. I hope that the Netherlands (My second favorite team) defeats Ghana on the 6th. and then hopefully Netherlands moves on to win #1 in the World Cup.

It’ll all work out in my favor, I’m sure of it.

Exsqueeze me non American here. I’d like to see the first African team reach the semi-final of the world cup. So Ghana for me, going to be a tough ask though penalties may be their only hope.

I am not American (i am Dutch, you know, the team that….), and i think i rather see Ghana win it tonight, because we beat them 3–0 some weeks ago in a friendly.
Although that doesn’t have to mean a thing, i am aware.
Uruquay would be okay too…, after we beat them, and Argentina we would be World Champions beating the last three surviving South American countries.
One can dream, can’t they?

I was cheering for Ghana last Saturday and I’m cheering for them today!! 1–0 at the half!

I’m rooting for Ghana. I’d rather we be beaten by the best.

They’re the only African team remaining, which is another reason to root for Ghana. Go Ghana!

Ghana. I was really impressed with their goalie during the USA match.

AAAAUUUGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! What an insane finish. Ghana deserved to go through there. So painful.

I was for Ghana. What a drama. They deserved to win.

I’m not quite sure how people are saying Ghana “deserved” to win. They missed three penalty kicks, the first of which would have ended the game without needing to go into the penalty kick round.

I agree that Ghana was certainly the emotional favorite, but did they play better than their opponents? Not in my opinion.

@MrItty – In the 121st minute Ghana would have scored a goal winning 2:1 – only the goalkeeper is entitled to use his hands. The Uruguayan player Suarez told himself, what the heck, let me get a red card, the game is almost over anyway. When Ghana didn’t score he featured a smirk. What an idiot.

MrItty's avatar

@mattbrowne yes. And Ghana was awarded a penalty kick for that. Roughly 80% of all professional penalty kicks are successful. His wasn’t.

MrItty's avatar

@mattbrowne I’m also not getting how you can call the guy an “idiot”. His action basically caused his team to win. At best, he was an unsportsman-like player.

@MrItty – He cheated. And yes, he might not be an idiot. But the smirk was an idiotic thing to do. At least to me. Anyway, it’s just a game. I supported Ghana and felt that it was very important for the esteem of the entire African continent.
