Do you think police officers get too comfortable? (details inside)

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) October 19th, 2010

I was driving to an appointment today and I came to a red light. I stopped, and on the opposite side was a police officer, who immediately did a U-turn in the intersection (driving over 2 curbs in the meanwhile) and then sped in the opposite direction without his lights or sirens on.
I can only suspect that there was a reason he felt the need to do this, but without his lights or sirens seems a little bit dangerous. It isn’t the first time I’ve witnessed such a thing, either. I used to drive out into the country frequently and I saw it all the time there. If I pulled up to a red light or a 4 way stop, police officers would always turn on their lights and pull through, then shut their lights right off.

Have you seen similar situations? Why do they do that? Is it an abuse of power, are they just too comfortable in their jobs and they forget the little details, or is there some kind of protocol that I don’t know about involving traffic jams and stop lights?

I’m sure I.A. of that dept. would be all over that if there was an accident caused by those patrolmen and there turned out to be no reason to have been that excessive. We can only hope they are paying attention when they are hot dogging like that.

They feel that since they’re protecting the law, minor infringements can’t be held against them, I see it all the time in my hometown. double, triple, once even quadruple parking, using their lights to get to Starbucks once, speeding without lights on (90 in a 55 mph limit zone), letting another cop go who was speeding in a civilian car, etc. However, I am glad for one thing is that when it does come to local crime, they do try to fight it to the best of their abilities, but it goes to their heads.

I don’t want to be misunderstood, because I have great respect for local law enforcement. I think they do a fantastic job. Things like this concern me a little bit though, and it makes me curious as to why they actually do it.

I live on a curve on a residential artery where the speed is posted at 25 MPH (for the curved section only; up and down the road from me it’s posted 35 MPH). Almost no one drives through at less than 40 MPH… and guess who the worst offenders are, at 45 – 50 MPH, and without lights or sirens.

Perks of the job, don’t make it right or clever though.

I have seen the same thing. I do not think it is universal. And generally, I overlook it, because cops take a lot of shit, and do not get paid enough.
But I think I saw something similar in the service. There are some guys, you give them a rifle, and they begin to imagine that they can do about anything they want.
