How many times today do you figure you were unknowingly moments away from death?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) November 18th, 2010

How close to death do you believe you came today but were fortunate enough to miss it? In the last week to 10 days in my area a man was shot to death while leaving a GED class at a church of all places, a young man was shot to death while standing out front of a hardware store with friends when gunmen opened fire on him for seeming no reason. A young boy was struck by a car and hurled into traffic where he was struck by a truck, he did not survive. A 60something woman trying to cross the street was mowed down and killed by a MUNI bus. I am sure when those people left their homes that morning they never imagined they would not be making it home that day. Some came to a demise initially others just random bad luck I guess. Who many times today do you felt you were a few seconds from death like going through an intersection 30 minutes before a drunk careens through it without stopping, or maybe passing under that tree moments before it fell over and would surely had crushed you?

I don’t think about it, because to live my life that way would be untenable. I just am grateful for every day that I have.

A better question for me would be how many times today do I actually feel alive?

You haven’t driven in upstate NY have you? It’s pretty routine.

With the amount of people I see texting while driving, I have to say dozens of times a day. As far as known near misses I have had a lot….so many I don’t like to think about it because I just should not still be alive.

Hypothetically the possibilities are endless…
*A plane crashing through my ceiling while fluthering.
*Car accident
*Toaster mishap
*Tsunami
So what? Live for life, not for death.

@Adirondackwannabe haven’t been in a taxi in Cairo?

@Deja_vu Haven’t tried the Cairo taxi. It’s probably similar to our roads but a lot more condensed.

I have had alot of close calls.I never counted though. One of the more bizarre times was being hit by a train. No,I wasn’t driving ;)
It is a long slow death that bugs me the most.

@lucillelucillelucille How did you get hit by a train?

@Adirondackwannabe -My boyfriend at the time – “Good Choice Chuck”, thought he could beat it and blew through the lights. We were coming back from a Halloween party in Detroit with 2 other people.Had we died,it would’ve taken awhile to ID the bodies. Our costumes were that good XD

I had the green light. all opposing traffic had stopped to yield to my car to move forward. out of the corner of my eye, i saw this vehicle making a right turn. i proceeded forward and was almost t-boned by this vehicle, driven by an elderly man. he ran the red ligt. i layed on my horn, along with the vehicle behind me, since he almost rammed me. very close call.

Statistics show that each driver has an auto accident every 32,000 miles driven. i guess it was my turn.

If I were “unknowingly” minutes from death, how would I know it?

gailcalled's avatar

If I thought this line of thinking were profitable, I’d say every instant I drew breath.
But that seems silly.

@Adirondackwannabe: Around here a traffic jam means three cars and a logging truck. There is also the annoying pile-up at the one traffic light in town.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@gailcalled We get more traffic than that, but I swear the idiots on the road around here think the proper place to be when cresting a hill is with two feet of your car across the center line. Every frigging day I get that.

I have escaped death numerous times as most of us have, known or unbeknownst to ourselves. lol

Serious falls from horses, near drowning, car accidents, deer leaping into my path while driving, stepping on a rattlesnake in sandles, coming face to face with a Mountain Lion, the list goes on. lol

For all I know I might have stopped breathing for a few seconds during the night, or maybe a black widow hovered over my bed and then skulked away, but…hey…GOOD MORNING!

I don’t worry about things beyond my control.

Every single time I get in a car.

Every time I step outside or attempt anything involving fire

Maybe right now. lol

Going out to see if I can climb a huge Oak tree and lure my teenage cat down from his precarious perch at the end of a wobbley thin branch about 25 above the ground.

I have 30 minutes til darkness falls and if I can’t get him down, it’s kitty camp out night, again. haha
