Does this mouth pain I'm having sound like something that is wisdom tooth related?

Asked by deni (23141points) December 31st, 2010

So I’m 21 and still have both my wisdom teeth (I only have them on the top, none on the bottom). Neither of them have come in yet and I’ve had no pain so far related to them. 2 days ago I noticed I was getting a pressured feeling on the left top side of my mouth, causing a tiny bit of jaw pain as well. It’s in the back of my mouth and my back 2 teeth “hurt” when I push on them with my bottom teeth. I use quotation marks because it’s not really painful, it’s just that I can feel it….I don’t know how to explain it. Anyhow, I have had MANY serious toothaches in my time and I know what a toothache feels like…this is not a toothache like any I have had. It doesn’t HURT….it just feels pressured. And when I open my jaw wide or yawn, I feel a bit of pain then.

I’m going to make a dentist appointment, but I know that my dentist isn’t open tomorrow and then I fly home on the 5th so who knows when I’ll actually get there. And I don’t think it’s an “emergency” so…..

Anyhow, for the time being, thoughts? Experience?

Sounds like your wisdom teeth.

Yup, sounds like the wisdom teeth are putting pressure on your molars and that can definitely cause the kind of pain you describe. This same thing happened to me a few years ago. My dad (a dentist) suggested I take ibuprofen if the pain gets bad, and to rinse with salt water if the teeth have broken the surface of the gum at all (it helps to prevent infection).

You’re right; it’s not an “emergency”, but you should get to your dentist when you can.

Yes! You are at the right age too. I had the same problem. I kept putting it off by taking aspirin, then tylenol, then tylenol 3 with codeine, until one day while driving to work I started to lose peripheral vision. (Look up TMJ)

I had the four wisdom teeth removed and have not had a problem since. Git ‘er done.

Having your wisdom teeth removed can take up to a week to get over.

Have you had a sinus infection, or stuffy head cold recently? That can cause upper teeth pain also.

@JLeslie Yes I started getting sick on Monday or Tuesday and was pretty stuffed up with a lot of sinus pressure towards the end of the week. Yesterday I was mostly better and I didn’t have any mouth pain either….coincidence?

I doubt it is a coincidence. You’ll know in a week. You’ll feel better, or a tooth will start coming out.
