Meta Question

Not a nice question. What do you think of Lurvewhores?

Asked by janedelila (3914points) January 12th, 2011

Seriously, I have been here a little bit, and maybe not long enough to really “get it”, but I have noticed something that disturbs me. Is it just me, or do sometimes people get close to a lurve milestone, and start to just answer random questions with flippant, sometimes thoughtless comments just to collect? Is that the point here for some? To get to a “mansion” or an “island” or wherever? Or to cause as much controversy as possible to gain a “rep” then do this? I won’t say the few I believe do this, but hey, just sayin. Please use Social Section guidelines if you like!

I just want attention… I would like to hear nice things about myself…so lonely and clueless am I…. I am hoping for insight from others… so it’s outsight?... but other than that… Lurve is just an addiction replacement for thank-you

Jude's avatar

Who cares?

I don’t.

janedelila's avatar

@Jude I don’t really stay up at night distressing about it, but it’s just in the last few days drawn my attention and irritated me slightly, so I thought I’d ask.

Jude's avatar

Just giving my response.

janedelila's avatar

@Jude Just giving you mine. Friendly, friendly….

Let’s examine this for a second.

What is lurve? baby don’t hurt me no mo’

It is an intangible, arbitrary score that does nothing to advance one’s station in the real world and one hundred years from now, nobody is going to care whether or not I had 15500 lurve at some point.

Lurve can sometimes be used to measure the quality of posts on here, but often it does not as many people only uprate their friends or answers they agree with. We (myself included) are all guilty of this.

The island/mansion thing is just a game… an inside joke of sorts. Everyone who does any consistent posting on fluther will get there eventually and when you do, it’s not as exciting as it sounds. Everyone circle jerks over you for a bit in a congratulatory thread, and then the glory fades. Some people look up to the members with higher scores, but again, in the end, it really doesn’t matter all that much in the grand scheme of the universe.

And about flippant comments…? Well… I’m the Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard, so it kind of comes with the territory.

Fred931's avatar

@janedelila what @Jude said is often the attitude for many of our regulars.

If these responses are truly inappropriate or reckless and are noticeably just designed to get a user to hop over a milestone, then they will be removed.

However, it’s likely that the users who are about to reach those milestones that begin to make such comments are doing exactly what they did to come so close to one particular milestone, and that they normally post such rampant comments.

As @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard explained, it is often personality more than narcissism.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard : LMAO. You did not just say “circle jerks”!

To answer the OP, I don’t really pay attention to other peoples’ scores. Unless I see a friend of mine named in a milestone question, then I get excited. It’s more about the quality of their contribution than it is about the score.

Besides, I like the lurve system here better than on other Q&A sites I’ve been a part of. For example, I can only give you 100 points. When I’ve reached that level, I’ve maxed out on you. I can still give you lurve. It simply won’t add to your score. It will count toward awards, though. I believe this little rule keeps the old timers and the newbies interacting. I like it.

janedelila's avatar

@Fred931 So if the comment is removed the lurve doesn’t count? Is there a flag for Lurvewhore? heheh

snowberry's avatar

It took me forever to get to 5000, and I didn’t really care that much. I’m currently posting on this question, and we’re having a blast. Incidentally, I find I’m racking up a lot of points too. http://www.fluther.com/109359/are-you-this-jelly-the-jelly-below-me______-part-5/#quip1790634

TexasDude's avatar

@hawaii_jake, I totally did. And I’m not gonna lie, I like getting circle jerked over every now and again. I can’t wait until my 20k circle jerk, even if I did say it’s all just an arbitrary game.

@janedelila, there is no flag for lurvewhoring because there is no way to quantify lurvewhoring. One answer you see as whoring lurve could, to another person, be a genuinely deserving answer. Me and the other mods do, on occasion, bust people for lurve gaming which is when you make multiple accounts on here and constantly uprate yourself. Don’t try it though, or we will send you to hell.

Winters's avatar

I just simply want to answer the question, I don’t care if I get lurve or not.

janedelila's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Ok I don’t wanna go to hell, even though I do have an alternate account, just for asking embarrassing questions. The two of us do not interact however. The circle jerking thing does sound like fun though…..

Cruiser's avatar

@janedelila Never dawned on me about lurve whoring….but ya got 30 more out of the deal though from me! Enjoy it while you can….thems lurve dry up quick as you go on.

<<make that 35>>

TexasDude's avatar

@janedelila that’s good. I thought about making an alternate account too, but I haven’t had a reason too, yet.

Oh, and here, have a GA for agreeing with me that circle jerks are fun.

Axemusica's avatar

I’m sorry this is a flippant and or thoughtless quip. I do not expect lurve for this answer, also please resist from clicking the “Good Answer” link. Thank you.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I don’t care. At all.

janedelila's avatar

@Axemusica Wasn’t me… @TheOnlyNeffie Ok….how come?

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard summed it up perfectly.

It was me.

prolificus's avatar

I used to care. Then I matured. Now I just scan through what I care to read and ignore the rest.

janedelila's avatar

@prolificus So it’s immature? I really don’t care so much, and at the beginning of the thread I state so, and in the question it does say “just sayin”. Why throw bait?

prolificus's avatar

@janedelila – hmmm. I’m not saying others are immature or otherwise. I’m saying I (me, myself, and I) matured. Becoming easily ticked over GA awards is no longer part of my Fluther experience.

YARNLADY's avatar

There is adequate protection through the site limits, and I can’t see how it matters, anyway.

janedelila's avatar

Oh you people are SO great! Thanks for the insight and personality glimpses….please continue to discuss and I will be back before noon to see. looka all mah lurve i got from this

Jude's avatar

@janedelila lurve whore! ;-)

Cruiser's avatar

@janedelila Well party is over for me….looks like I maxed out after 45 lurve. It was fun while it lasted. ;)

YARNLADY's avatar

I’m an enabler, I GA every question and most answers.

AstroChuck's avatar

Just for future reference, the term is Lurverts, not Lurvewhores.

wilma's avatar

@AstroChuck “Lurverts” ;-)!

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I’ve never noticed the phenomenon you describe and I feel completely neutral about people just doing it for lurve.

cookieman's avatar

“Lurve Whores”?!?

Have you met the Lurve Pimps?

who’s ‘dat jelly with big ole…
watch yo mouth!
mm hmm, ‘dat’s right ladies

DominicX's avatar

I really don’t care at all. I just don’t. I don’t watch other people’s points, I don’t care about how much I have or how much they have or how they get it, it just doesn’t matter to me one bit at all.

YARNLADY's avatar

Does answering the same question more than once make someone a lurvert?

rooeytoo's avatar

Hi, my name is @rooeytoo and I am a lurvertwhore.

rooeytoo's avatar

Now that’s a cute answer, I better get some lurvin for that one, comeon y’all!

MissA's avatar

@janedelila

Why is this so important to you?

Try to focus upon what lies beyond the lurve and you’ll not notice this aspect of fluther so much.

Lurve is for the fun of it…enjoy it for what it is.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Meh, sometimes it’s the flippant answers that make me give lurve, simply because the answer itself makes me smile or laugh.

Blueroses's avatar

I am not a lurve whore, I am a lurve consort.

I have never fluthered with an eye toward r(e)aping points off of people, but I have a variety of moods and when I’m feeling particularly lonely or clever or drunk I run around the site answering a lot of different questions… purely for the social interaction.

It’s the GFE.

rooeytoo's avatar

@Blueroses – hehehe, love consort, good one!

janbb's avatar

Hey – Someone who’s not maxed out on me, please give me a GA for this so I can get to over 28,000. (Bats eyelashes and shows legs) Lurvewhore? Surely not moi!

Blueroses's avatar

I think I’m maxed @janbb. Please accept this virtual lurve

prolificus's avatar

@janbb – you made me giggle with your GA!

janbb's avatar

Thank you – whomever you were!

rooeytoo's avatar

I gave you one too but I know I am maxed out on you, ages ago!!!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@janbb There, bumped you up by 5. You have such pretty legs, I couldn’t resist.

janbb's avatar

Thanks, they’re short but they waddle well.

Fred931's avatar

Hey, I think there’s free lurve in here, too! ~

janedelila's avatar

You people are super awesome and I lurve you all. For those of you who still don’t get it, I really don’t care a whole lot. It’s just a question, seriously!

TexasDude's avatar

@janedelila WE DONT BELIEVE YOU

Just kidding. Hope you enjoy your stay here. I’ll throw your 10k circle jerk, too, if you remind me when you get there.

janedelila's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard 10k?? What if I ever get to 5? Does that count or am I gonna have to put on the fishnets and get serious?

TexasDude's avatar

oh! Fishnets!

Nope. Only 10k and multiples of it from then on (20k, 30k, and so on)

prolificus's avatar

Meanwhile, in other news, prolificus has surpassed the 5k mark, and eagerly awaits for lots o’ lurve to gain 10k Mansion access.

wilma's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I hope that if and when I reach 10K that you will be right there for the circle jerk. I just wanted to type circle jerk

TexasDude's avatar

@wilma I was planning on throwing yours too, since I like you and all.

wilma's avatar

grins :-)

Jude's avatar

Here is what I think of when I read “circle jerk”; a group dudes in a circle, jerking each other off.

wilma's avatar

Um… well ya @Jude, that is what it means, but we are using it otherwise, sort of….

TexasDude's avatar

@Jude, hey… me too!

janedelila's avatar

Wow!! Who knew this question would grow like this? When I asked in meta, I really expected not so much….you people are why I love it here. AND I DON’T CARE SO MUCH DAMMIT!!!
