Unknown rash...help!

Asked by Unknown82 (228points) January 17th, 2011

I have been getting this rash for a really long time on and off. It varies but mostly it is large puffy circular rashes. They itch really really bad! They are mostly on my upper thighs and hips, but lately they have been getting bigger and showing up in more places like on my sides and butt. I started getting them about 2 years ago every once in a while but now I get them almost every day! They are awful!

Could be a yeast infection. Yes, they happen outside of girl parts. luckily the cure is 10 bucks at the pharmacy. Go to you doctor.

Go see a doctor. They’ll be able to give you some kind of topical cream for it. I suffer from eczema and get patches on my arms, legs and belly that are incredibly itchy. If you get the right cream, though, the itch goes away and it’s much more manageable.

Head straight out to the doctors.

I had Pityriasis Rosea for years during my teens and early twenty’s – it didn’t itch, but damn it looked ugly.
No treatment was required however, and it cleared up on it’s own.

My point being, it really could be anything so get yourself checked out for peace of mind and treatment (if necessary).

Maybe ringworm? Do you have cats or other animals?

i was thinking parasitic infestation as well. recently saw a monsters inside me that was similar.

There are any number of causative organisms that can create a rash similar to what you are describing. If you can’t get to a dermatologist, at least see your GP so that you select the correct treatment for what you have rather than trying random solutions that may aggravate your condition.

I know it if not pityriasis rosea. Because my daughter just had that and it comes and goes in 6 to 8 weeks… And it’s not ring wormit’s to puffy for that not a destinct circle.

I suggest you not self-diagnose or be satisfied with any of our diagnoses. Get yourself to the dermotologist and find out from a pro. Chances are, it’s not terribly serious and easily treatable. Good luck!

Sounds like what ever it is, it’s getting worse and you need to show it to a doctor.
Does it only or mainly occur during the winter months? I’m guessing nummular dermatitis, but how big are the circles? You want to rule out anything bad, so go see a doctor first, especially if they itch so bad they’re making you miserable. The doctor can prescribe a higher concentrate of cortizone cream than you can get at the pharmacy, so it might be worth going even if that’s all you come home with.
Let us know how you get on.

It occurs any time. It is not cold at all here and I still have it. I will keep you updated

@Unknown82

Have you seen a doctor about this, as several have recommended? If not, why not? None of us are dermatologists.

There is also “dermatographic uticaria,” which are red, itchy hives caused by allergies. The histamine affects the outer skin. If you scratch or put pressure on a spot, red weals come up.
If you scratch a tic-tac-toe board on your arm, that will appear also.

No I have not seen a doctor and I am well aware none of you are dermatologists. But I am trying to figure out what this is because honestly I don’t have the money to give a doctor especially if it is something minor I can handle myself. Also the reason I am askingon here is because I an sure I am not the only one who has had this problem.

If you don’t want to see a doctor, I’d suggest you try a cortisone cream, available at the pharmacy over the counter. If that doesn’t take care of your rash, please go to the doc.

Ok thank you very much.

@Unknown82 I know what you mean. I live in a country with socialised healthcare, but there is still a co-payment and my time. I hate going in there only to be told… well, it’s nothing or it should go away, but if it gets worse, come back…grrrrr.

If you want to put it off and feel it’s ok to put it off, really, I’d try over the counter hydrocortisone cream. Like what @Seelix said.

Now, if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, don’t use ANY chemical without asking a registered pharmacist or your doctor.

Here’s a brief online guide about meds and pregnancy:
http://women.webmd.com/pharmacist-drugs-medication-9/pregnancy-medicine

These are listed as safe for a rash if you’re pregnant:
Hydrocortisone cream or ointment
Caladryl lotion or cream
Benadryl cream
Oatmeal bath (Aveeno)

Have you changed your diet or are you using a new soap? Topical eczema can be worsened by the strangest things. Did you get a gift of soap for Christmas? Is it highly scented? Have you been eating more sugary foods lately?

My only real worry is if it’s parasitic, bacterial or fungal, in which case, it’s not going to go away on its own.
