Why won't these 2 hard drives work together?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) February 25th, 2011

On my new computer I have an 80 gig maxtor set to master and a 60 gig set to slave. I have a second 80 gig maxtor though, and want to use that as the secondary instead of the 60 gig. When I connect the 8— gig the computer doesn’t find any hard drives, even when it is set to slave (no jumper) and cable select. What’s going wrong? Both hard drives work fine.

That sounds like an odd one if, in fact, all of the drives work fine on their own.

Have you tried hooking the second 80GB drive to the secondary IDE controller?

The only other IDE cable slot is hooked up to a CD and DVD drive, and I don’t thinl that the cables would reach, even if putting 1 hd and one cd/dvd drive per cable would work. What I don’t get is why 2 different ones work but 2 maxtor drives dont.

When you write, “computer doesn’t find any hard drives,” what is telling you that? the OS or BIOS? You might try tools like http://partedmagic.com/doku.php to see if it sees the drives or not.

@Chreese At the startup where is shows all attatched devices shows no hard drives attatched, but everything else is there. Even tools on HBCD don’t show the 2 drives.

odd problem. you might try updating the motherboard bios, or check if any of the bios updates fixes the particular problem. Be careful w/ bios updates as they can really screw things up. Or, if there is an option to reset the nvram, that might help as well. You might just go out and buy an IDE controller card $20? and put it in a PCI slot. Sounds easier and will probably give you better performance.
