Why do dogs like to ride in cars with their heads stuck out of the windows?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) March 19th, 2011

Just happened to take a look outside and a truck pulled into the parking lot with a dog hanging out the window. Why do they do it? Doesn’t it seem the air flow would mess with their eyes? Just a random Saturday thought. It’s in the details Josie.

Oh, c’mon, wouldn’t you? It’s actually bad for their eyes and ears, they pick up stuff…

They enjoy all of the scents.

My two dogs never did like to ride, but I don’t think they ever got to ride when they were young.

It’s the closest they’ll get to a blow job, at least one that’s not self inflicted.

@lucillelucillelucille Are you sure there aren’t laws against that?

They love the plethora of scents (ones that we don’t even smell).

So ironic you asked that question. My puppy had his first experience with it yesterday. He was in the back seat and it was 70 F outside. I rolled down his window and he went bonkers with his head rolling side to side, swirling and taking all the new scents in.
He didn’t stick his head out, but just sat there and swayed his head like a lunatic taking it all in. Funny stuff.

My chocolate lab loves to stick her head out the window, when we had a sunroof she stuck her head out there. My black lab X hates car rides one time though he was in the back of the SUV and the windows were open sitting up and enjoying the breeze almost sleeping. I think its not just the smells but it feels good it’s like when you put your hand out the window, it feels nice.
@blueiiznh I lurve your puppy :D

This answer comes from a very reliable source…..my border collie.

The highlight of his life is when he goes riding in the car. His head is stuck out the window, even if the outside temperature is 10 below zero.

I asked “Mikey” one day, “Michael, how come you love to stick your head out of the car window?”. He replied, “because I can smell a million different smells all at one time”.

His answer was good enough for me.
