If a class doesn't teach me what it says it will, is there a course of action I can take? (details)

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19059points) March 30th, 2011

I’m taking a religious history class in which the teacher is more than a month behind. If she keeps up this pace (and she’s shown no sign of speeding up), we will cover, at best, half the material we are supposed to for this class. I feel like this is a waste of my time and money, that she’s failing to deliver on her promise to teach us what she said she would. I’m also worried that should I take any class that says it builds on it (it’s an intro class) that I won’t be adequately prepared. Is there anything I can do about this?

Yes, let the administration know.

My mom had a couple of classes refunded due to teacher/professor ineptitude. One, you shouldn’t pay for something that isn’t as advertised. Two, as you said, it may cause issues in future studies.

@SpatzieLover Do you know who I would talk to about it?

What are you using to gauge her progress? Bullet points on a syllabus? Usually the basic are beaten to death and then things pick up. You want to build a house on a solid foundation. Like how multiplication is easy to learn once you understand how to add.

Start by talking to the Chair of that academic department. If you don’t get satisfaction, take it to the Academic VP.

@math_nerd It’s World Religions. We’re supposed to cover Shamanism, Paganism, Israelite Tribes, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Birth of Christianity, Spread of Christianity, Islam, Vedic religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, Buddhism expands, Chinese religion. In that order. We’re not done with Judaism yet, and the first week of May is the last week of the semester.

@janbb Unfortunately, she is the Chair of Religious Studies.

Have you been keeping up to date with the readings as they are listed on the syllabus? Maybe she expects that you are reading ahead, even if she is not yet talking about that material in class? I’m not sure that you have any recourse, except to write everything down on the end of semester (term) course evaluation that your department or school probably requires.

@answerjill We don’t have readings; it’s all lecture-based.

@SpatzieLover So do you know who exactly I would talk to about this issue?

@janbb gave you a good start @MyNewtBoobs…Since she is the Chair, take it to the next person above her. Is there a VP to discuss this with?

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@SpatzieLover Like, of the entire school? There’s like… 5 vice chancellors of the school. Plus, it’s a campus with 3 different schools on it, and I go to one school, and she teaches at another school, and this is a pooled class where there’s 5 spots for students from my school to take this class through her school, so I don’t even know which school’s administration to talk to.

Talk to the Academic Vice-Chancellor at her school.
