How to sell my card collection?

Asked by gameeboya (84points) April 10th, 2011 from iPhone

Ok I want to sell my entire collection of yu-gi-oh cards over 1600 of them from ultra rare to common crap. So my question is how do I do this (I want to sell them in bulk) and can you give me any other way besides eBay? Oh and what would you sell them for all in near mint to mint condition.

Craigslist?

How about a local card store. But be realistic about their worth. Most cards are worth much less than the retail price.

@zenvelo A friend of mine tried to sell a stack of about 100 common Yu-Gi-Oh cards at a local game shop. The game shop only offered him a quarter.

I sold a bunch of Pokemon cards on ebay a year ago. Selling in bulk worked for me.

One time, however, I sold a single rare baseball card on its own and got a good price for it. That was 4 years ago, before the financial crisis.

Trying to sell them along with other items in a Yard/Garage Sale could work. Not a lot of people look around to buy used cards—if they are into the game, they’ll buy retail and if they aren’t, they won’t be interested. If you have them available along with other unrelated items, the random passerby might be interested and buy a few.

You probably won’t be able to offload all of them and you most certainly won’t be able to make all your money back. You need to remember that what is an “Ultra-Rare” to someone who plays the game is just “a shiny piece of paper” to someone who doesn’t. Sell them at a low price because even if you get far less than you paid for, you’re still getting more than if you overcharge and no one buys any.

Yard sales or flea markets can often be successful for this sort of thing….I once sold a Star Wars hologram card for $30 at a flea market. Remember, kids who collect this type of thing will be coming along with their parents, and if they’re collectors as well, may be able to convince their parents to buy them something. Also, kids today have an alarming amount of money to spend of their own.

All this being said, you will most likely not unload these cards in bulk in the above type of setting, but if you want to get the maximum amount of money out of your collection, I would try this option. Also, get some binders and some clear sheets that the cards go in to put in the binders. People are more likely to buy them if you have them neatly displayed and organized, and if they can flip through them they will find it easier to locate what you are looking for…

Gameshops are a bad idea. They give you way less than you’d get on ebay or craigslist, and they’re usually(with rare exceptions) very snooty and rude.
