How easy and what is the quality of the DIY foam insulation kits on the market?

Asked by LOP1102 (5points) April 19th, 2011

I am considering spraying the underside of my lake cabin with a DIY foam insulation kit which includes tanks, nozzle, etc. How effective are these, how difficult, and how does the cost compare to just paying an insulation company to do it. Also, as this is the underside of the floor how well does it adhere.

I’d like to see a link to such a system. Right now it seems like its going to be a mess if it amounts to copious foam patches coating the underside of the floor.Seems any time you are spraying stuff upside down overhead the stuff is going to get all over the person doing it. If it is anything like those small foam cans, the stuff is all but impossible to clean off anything. Will rodents eat the stuff?

I used a little to seal around some veritcal pipes through a concrete floor. I recommend putting some tarpaper or something ahead of time to mold the foam up against the underside and define the bottom of the volume. For one thing to the extent it’s ever seen it will look better and you’re likely to get better uniformity and lose less to the ground below.

Further explanation: The kit I am referring to is not the little spray cans (Like Great Stuff), but is a commercial grade in tanks like a propane tank almost. It is pressurized and sprays on and expands to fill the space.
