How to get rid of noisy birds?

Asked by quibblet (67points) June 30th, 2011

Hello,

There are noisy birds at night outside my window and sometimes I can’t sleep. I don’t like using ear plugs every night either. Is there some ways to deter this problem because it’s very irritating.

I got an airsoft plastic pellet gun and fired it into the trees repeatedly over about a weeks time. No more birds, and no harmed birds.

Get a white noise machine and use it nightly. Birds are having babies now and will make “noise” while gathering food and teaching their fledglings to fly.

A belated welcome to Fluther!

Short of moving, there isn’t much that can be done outside, other than re-landscaping, if that is an option. Even then, it doesn’t always work. Inside, there are many options. Keep the windows closed, or replace them with windows that provide a better sound barrier. Even heavier drapes can help buffer the noise. Internal devices can muffle the sounds as well.

What are your sleeping habits like? They can change over time due to age and other factors, like stress, having a child, diet, exercise, etc.

Depending on the state or country you live in their are laws regarding problem birds and wildlife dependent on species.

In California it is illegal to harm, disturb, or otherwise tamper with nesting birds. After the breeding season is over it is then okay to remove old nests or take preventive measures to discourage future nesting in a particular area.

All species of songbirds are protected, with only Starlings, House sparrows, Crows and Pigeons exempt. However, no decent person would harm these species either until the above mentioned appropriate time.

While it may be annoying it is temporary, and I would encourage you to broaden your sights and have tolerance. Humans aren’t the only creatures that have a right to pursue their life, liberty and happiness.
