Is it a good idea to brush teeth exclusively with baking soda over the long term?

Asked by intrepidium (1235points) July 13th, 2011

I read that baking soda works very well as a cleaning agent and whitener and have tried toothpastes incorporating them. I’m wondering though what the long term effect might be if I used it neat and exclusively to brush my teeth?

I’m not sure about this but I believe that it is too abrasive to use over the long term. It would wear down the enamel on your teeth. Once in a while is okay though.

I can’t imagine that it would taste very good, though.

I don’t really mind the taste and am more concerned that my teeth get a good clean; I’m pretty sure my teeth enamel is already well worn and that being the case, I’m wondering if I might be doing more damage than good to my teeth by brushing with baking soda… I do use a soft brush though

A dentist friend of mine told me that once in a blue moon is OK, but it’s not something he recommends doing on regular basis since it can change the pH balance in your mouth.

No, it breaks down your enamel. I’d say once a month for whitening is fine.

“There are a few things to keep in mind when brushing with baking soda: Baking soda is an abrasive and, used daily, can permanently damage the enamel of your teeth. Therefore, you should alternate this method with other natural toothpastes. Also, baking soda won’t kill bacteria directly unless used in high enough concentrations, so you may want to employ a tongue scraper or rinse with a mouthwash. Finally, baking soda can dissolve orthodontic glue, so people with braces or permanent retainers should not use this method.”
