Is a Broadway preview an actual performance? (See below for more info)

Asked by rentluva5256 (555points) July 19th, 2011

As my username states, Rent is one of my favorite shows ever. So, being a rent head, when they put it back on Broadway, I immediately bought tickets. Now, the ticket says “promo”, and on the online schedule it says “Preview.” So I was just a tad bit confused as to if it is the real show or just a part of it or something. If anybody understands this and/or knows what I’m talking about, please explain this to me. Thank you!

As far as I know it just means the show isn’t “Open” yet. It could mean they are tweaking it before the opening, or it could mean there will be “guest” cast mambers.

It’s a real show, but it’s still considered a dress rehearsal of sorts. A dress rehearsal before an audience. They see how it’s going over and tweak things before the official opening.

So is it still worth seeing?

Personally, I think any performance I want to go to is worth seeing. Maybe you can look up the date online and see if there’s any difference listed?

EDIT: I found An Article for this Off-Broadway re-opening of rent with some of the actors listed.

Of course, it’s worth seeing. Most likely you are seeing the shows that the reviewers will see and write about. It’s like you get to know how it is before everyone else does.

@SpatzieLover What do you mean by a difference listed?

Sometimes, there will be a significant difference (as in the preview is for charity and they’ll put some guest “star” actors in the roles for the night or weekend) Sometimes as we both mentioned above, there will be minor differences as their working our set/dress changes.

If there’s an article online regarding the date you bought tickets for, then you will know if there’s anything special about the Preview you purchased tickets for.

Spiderman- Turn Off the Dark was in preview for over six months, at full prices. But it kept getting changed as they found problems, and closed for remodeling for a long time.

Odd about Rent though, because it is an established play, so it would not be rewritten, only re-staged. Perhaps they are still working out the blocking and staging.
