In the header of the document, there’s a drop-down for ‘Lists’ where you can choose different types of bullets (simple * or numbered, etc.).
I don’t think you can different layouts, that’s the simplicity (and beauty) of TextEdit.
yeah, but that makes my notes one long list, rather than an outline. Also when I want to go back and start a new heading the bullets disapear and I have to open lists again (which would be a lot)
So using tab to create ‘sub bullets’ isn’t enough?
Then I think you may want to look at something else, like Numbers, using the checklist template perhaps, you could create a new sheet for each subject/class.
how do I create sub bullets? That sounds promising.
just press the tab key. They won’t be numbered though. They’ll only have – in front of them, but you can create several ‘levels’ and if you hit enter twice, it jumps back up to the higher level.
perfect, that’s what made it not work is getting back to a higher level. Thank.
no probs – glad it works for ya :)
I would recommend a note-taking software like NoteScribe (shameless plug for company’s product). It will allow you to do different types of outlines (including bullet points), as well as help you to keep your notes organized and archived in one place. There are quite a few more features of the program that you can try for 30 days for free. Download it at www.notescribe.net and let us know what you think. I hope (and I think) it will help a lot.

yeah, the reason I want to use textedit obviously isn’t because its wondrful for note taking, but because it came with my computer and I don’t want to pay for anything else.
And its been working okay after wildflowers advice, thanks though.
Sure, no problem. I hope that it works out for you either way! :)

MS Office 2008 has this feature built in to Word, and educational discounts are extended to faculty, staff and students.
