I can tell you from experience that being in the military prior to your application to the police academy does look better on paper, and will certainly prepare you mentally and physically for the role of a police officer, but it does not guarantee acceptance into the police academy. I would recommend taking some classes in criminal justice, and getting in great shape. (Not to imply you are a lazy and overweight person) Please keep in mind there are different requirements for each state, and it would benefit you to do research on the type of police work you want to be involved in, and simply go for it! Good luck!!

Most police departments have the same requirements. I was in the Metro-Nashville Police Department for 44 years. I really did have a good police experience, while there. The only section I did not work was in Child Abuse. I love children too much to tolerate a parent or guardian abusing a child and my department knew this. I worked background investigations, on police applicants, for three years. So, I have a good well-rounded knowledge of the police profession. Some departments require an Associate Degree before they will even talk to you.Your background has to be spotless, at least in my department. The following will prevent you from becoming a police officer: extensive traffic record, criminal record, outstanding warrants, failing a written and oral psychological exam., failing the physical agility course, failing a neighorhood and faily background check, some departments will check your credit record, failing a complete physical, color blind, and other investigations.

As you can see, not everyone is qualified to become a police officer. Most applicants will fail the physical agility courses and physical training.

If you think you can make the grade, as described above, I would highly suggest you get your body in great physical shape. The police academy dwells on stamina and running. You will run each day. You will have a 10-mile run at the end of the academy training. You will have classes, classes, classes, to make absolutely sure you know the criminal laws of your state and county backwords and forward.

I have been through my police academy…..twice. Once at age 21 and again at age 58. I will tell you this, it was not easy.
