Pain in jaws?

Asked by JMCSD (243points) July 24th, 2011

You know that weird, almost uncomfortable feeling you get when you eat something really strong/sour/tart? (Right where the jaw is connected). Well, it won’t stop. It hurts. I believe its being cause by the parotid gland, but I can’t verify. Can you help. This is becoming quite uncomfortable.

Talk to a doctor or dentist. You may get some comfort from wearing a bite guard at night, but there are a handful of things that could be causing your pain, and starting with a diagnosis would be the most helpful.

See a doctor. It could be TMJ:

“Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the mandible to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines—in particular, dentistry and neurology—there are a variety of treatment approaches.”

That happens to me a few times a year and have heard others mentioning the same thing. It always seems to involve eating something really tart. I think they’re called “pixie sticks.” The kind that’s made out of a thin paper tube filled with what tastes like powdered sweet tarts. You rip the end off and pour it in your mouth and then it comes, that strong almost indescribable feeling way back in the jaw but, it lasts as long as maybe a brain freeze incident and it’s gone. The kids seem to like it, then again when my boy was small I caught him in the bath tub squishing his nuts with a set of plastic pliers. I just turned and walked away.

Does your jaw swell up at all?

I have TMJD but you’d need to see a specialist I would think to be sure. Is it when you eat, all the time, sporadic? Do you grind your teeth or clench your jaw? Do you wake up with it being sore? Is it a pain or an ache or both? Headaches? Throbbing? I’ve had it for probably nearly two years now…and no sign of a cure…I’m currently trying heat packs and ice packs, relaxation, jaw exercises…I’ve been on various sleeping tablets, propranolol and anti-inflammatories and rather miserable with it. If it’s the same thing I feel your pain! But hopefully it’s something less chronic…I would go and get it checked out xx Let us know how you get on xx

I appreciate all the information @nebule. It hasn’t happened since. It was unusual, happened a few times in a month or so, but hasn’t happened since. I’ll keep ya posted though.
