So we all have our opinions of who is an atrciously horrid actor. Have they had a role the impressed you?

Asked by King_Pariah (11484points) September 26th, 2011

Example: I think that Val Kilmer is one of the worst actors in the industry. The man can’t act! However I have to say that his performance as Doc Holiday in Tombstone was impressive. Any horrible actors you can think of that have that one role that they just blew out of the water?

Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. I did not see that coming.

@King_Pariah Could he have been any worse than when he played in Top Gun? ugh

King_Pariah's avatar

@chyna perhaps in that one batman film? I didn’t even like it as a kid.

I am convinced Harrison Ford cannot act at all. He has, however, gotten the best part in every movie made since I was a child. He is not blowing these roles out of the water, these roles are so good that they cover up for his lack of skill.

Robin Williams always stars in silly, insignificant movies, but I thought his role in “Good Will Hunting” was exceptional and showed a different side to him.

I hated Mary Lynn Rajskub‘s acting throughout 24 – it’s as though the director told her, every time she said anything, “No! That’s all wrong for Chloe! Say the line faster and with less emotion!” I was also unimpressed with her sketch comedy in Mr. Show. But then I saw her in Sunshine Cleaning and was surprised by how sensitive her acting was. It was a difficult role, and she was perfectly awkward in it.

Also, Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect. He still maintained his usual dumbfounded expression throughout most of the movie, but it happened to fit the craziness of the story well. And he did some good acting, too – like when his character woke up without arms or legs.

I love me some Keanu Reeves. I don’t care what anybody says.

I hate Mel Gibson. I love Braveheart. That’s all I’ll admit to.

@MRSHINYSHOES I am generally not a fan of Robin Williams, but I agree with you about “Good Will Hunting” and I also thought he was great “Awakenings.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wesley Crusher.
I also can not stand Adam Sandler. This guy is like the personification of the word “Dumbass”.

I cannot STAND Owen Wilson… I can’t stand watching him and I can’t stand listening to him but The Royal Tannenbaums is one of my favorite movies.

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@ragingloli so would have agreed with you until I saw “The Guild”. Wesley was born to play being a smug dumbass

Night at the museum was okay too… They shrunk him. I don’t like Ben Stiller either.

I refused to see Saturday Night Fever because I did not want my money going to support John Travolta, But I will admit in the ‘90s he did have some good roles.

I feel the same way with Jim Carrey; but I liked the Truman Show.

Nicolas Cage seems to be awful in just about everything.

chyna's avatar

@zenvelo I agree with you on Nicolas Cage. I haven’t liked anything he’s been in.

filmfann's avatar

I hate Nick Cage, but he was terrific in “Wild At Heart”.
Seth Rogan was okay in “Knocked Up”, but I really think he isn’t funny. He is like a subtitles for the blind. “Whoa, you just pressed a button, and that gun popped up!”

mangeons's avatar

@chyna I was actually just talking to my friend about this today; I love the movie National Treasure so much that I don’t even mind Nicolas Cage in it. Go ahead and judge me, but it’s one of my favorite movies!

chyna's avatar

@mangeons I admit, I haven’t seen that movie because he was in it. You recommend it? I will watch it just because you like it!

tom_g's avatar

@filmfann – Nicholas Cage was great in Wild at Heart. Great movie too. Did you see Cage in Adaptation. I thought he was excellent in that.

SavoirFaire's avatar

Anyone who hates Nicholas Cage should watch Adaptation and/or Bringing Out the Dead.

Personally, I can’t stand Tom Cruise. As much as I like Eyes Wide Shut, he drags it down. But I do think he did a good job in Vanilla Sky. I’ve also heard his role in Tropic Thunder makes the film.

And I will never say another bad thing about Macaulay Culkin after seeing him in Saved!

cheebdragon's avatar

Adam Sandler really impressed me with his role in Reign Over Me, I like his comedy classics, but when he started doing more serious films i thought his performance in Spanglish was awkward, so i didnt expect much from him in Reign Over Me, and I was soo wrong because he really owned that role…

cheebdragon's avatar

@SavoirFaire tom cruise was fucking awesome in Tropic Thunder, gotta love the dancing

GladysMensch's avatar

Adam Sandler… horrible in just about everything. Incredible in Punch Drunk Love

zenvelo's avatar

@mangeons @chyna My daughter suggested Nicolas Cage because she liked Nat’l Treasure but can’t stand him.

martianspringtime's avatar

I can’t stand Will Ferrell but I thought Elf was really cute…

Oh and there’s something about Reese Witherspoon that I hate, but I thought she was good in Water for Elephants. I was expecting that movie to be awful considering she and Robert Pattinson were both the leads and book-based movies usually suck, but Robert and Reese both impressed me. Having Christoph Waltz in a leading role doesn’t hurt either <3__<3

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’m with @martianspringtime. Will Ferrell is one of the worst actors I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing on the big screen.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Brad Pitt in Fight Club. Not only was he good in that movie, when I usually hate watching him.. it’s probably one of my favorite roles in a movie, ever.

mangeons's avatar

@chyna I think you should definitely see it, it’s fantastic!

flutherother's avatar

I agree, Nicholas Cage is appalling, but he was perfect in Kick Ass.
