@tom_g – What did you find most appealing about that film, tom_g?

Inception or Tree of Life.

@Mantralantis – I won’t say too much about the film because I don’t want to ruin it. Let’s just say that I was in complete awe when I saw it, despite already being a fan of Charlie Kaufman. It’s one of the most ambitious films, and it did exactly what I want a film to do: it made me think, it resonated in some deep way, and it lingers with me today (over a year after I saw it).

If it helps to get an idea of my tastes, I’m also a huge fan of Jarmusch, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, and the Coen brothers.

Also, I agree when Ebert in his review states:

“I think you have to see Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York” twice. I watched it the first time and knew it was a great film and that I had not mastered it. The second time because I needed to. The third time because I will want to.”

He went as far as to declare it the best film of the decade.

@erichw1504, @Blackberry – Inception certainly was an exceptional film and a great candidate for a top five.

I guess that would have to be “Barton Fink”. It’s actually from 1991, but I just saw it this summer and I have to say I thought it was amazing, despite how surreal and confusing it may have been. But apparently that’s the type of movie I like and Barton Fink helped inspire the story I’m writing this month for NaNoWriMo. So, definitely, that movie is added to my Top 5.

@tom_g – Yes, I suppose no one should reveal anything about a film others might not have seen. Thanks.

@smilingheart1 – I haven’t seen that one yet. I understand there’s some stuttering involved.

It’s a bit early to judge but I loved Wuthering Heights

On the top of my head, without taking it all in, I would probably say the “last before last great film” I’ve seen that could have eked into my top five would most likely be The Cider House Rules which was released over ten years ago. Clearly I’m due for an update. I’ll do some research and get back with you on that one.

The most recent movie in my top 5 is 1979’s Manhattan.
The most recent movie in my top 20 is probably “Memento”, which I think came out in 2000.

I just saw “Heaven Can Wait” ( Don Ameche ) and now it’s on my top five list.
