What is your decorating and housekeeping style?

Asked by smilingheart1 (6439points) November 15th, 2011

Do you have a decorating theme, choice of furnishings or are you casual and eclectic? Minimalist, cluttery, or a hoarder or somewhere in between..what describes you best. Write an essay if you want, this is an interesting topic!

I have an essentially empty apartment with my bed, a dresser, and a few lawn chairs in the living room lol. Some people think it’s strange, but it’s my first apartment, so I don’t feel the need to waste money on stuff I don’t need. I do like the minimal feel of it, and when I establish a more homely home, I will definitely have the least amount of stuff possible.

I always loved those modern interior designs.

If I had a house, I would love to decorate it myself. Painting, furniture, ornaments etc.
Currently though, I’m making do with my bedroom. I’ve got a lot of stuff, mostly books, so my room looks very full, but I always like to put things like photoframes, ornaments, trinket boxes on top of the wall shelves I have and on top of my bookcase. I have a light coloured wallpaper, creamy, and it’s mostly covered with paintings I’ve painted and put up. I have navy blue velvet curtains that I think go wonderfully well and make a good contrast against the light cream colour of the wallpaper.
I love collecting old things, especially if they’re made out of wood, clay and marble. I have a couple of wooden bowls and a little antique wooden perfume box that belonged to my great-grandmother that I love showing off on top of my bookcase.

My house is an eclectic ethnic mix of chinese, japanese, indian and modern.
Persian rug, shinto screens and carved screens, black bombay type tables, asian artwork, modern artwork, ethnic hand drums and my pride and joy, a huge, authentic, temple gong. Bruuuung! lol
I painted two walls in my living room a metallic bronze last year and one looks amazing with a giant abstract painting I have.

My bedroom is 60’s – 70’s retro -ish with 2 limey avacado green walls and a mixture of green, turquoise and yellow. Sheer yellow and white silk curtains, psychedelic green paisley comforter, pale blue silk duvet, yellow chiffon and turquoise batik throw pillows and glass top end tables with wild metal wall sculptures in black, turquoise and green.
Think Marcia Brady on acid. haha

I’m pretty tidy most of the time, but, the dust can wait if I have something more enticing to do. lol

Actually jumping into action on some stuff now for a 7 o’ clock get together, B-Day celebration! :-)

I like the whole Arts and Crafts look. William Morris, Art Nouveau, earthy colors, lots of wood. I don’t like anything too modern and slick. It needs to be comfortable and warm looking.
I have a real struggle with keeping the clutter down because I love pottery and decorative objects. I like things that have a history and collections of things that come from around the world . One thing I have that is really cool I bought for a song! It is a necklace with charms dangling off it of the Chinese zodiac. It’s mounted in a shadowbox with a matte around it. Another thing I have is a really unique carved folk art walking stick that looks almost African but is probably American. I also love glassware.
I have tons of pillows because I love beautiful textiles and embroidery.Lighting is important to me.It needs to be warm and flattering to the skin. I have dimmer switches on a lot of the lamps and I love candles too.

The older I get the more I become organized and neat…. When I was in high school everything in my room (clothing, books, makeup, music, shoes, etc) was scattered around…. Now I keep everything in order.

I also used to keep stuff and hoard things… I don’t do that anymore. Anything I don’t have a use for gets thrown out or donated because it just clogs space :)

As for style I’ve always loved elegant, very feminine designs. I love exotic decor also.

Lots of books, art on the wall, candles, exotic pieces, etc. My mom is fond of the Victorian era, and so am I, but in little doses.

I’m also obsessed with really beautiful frames for pictures. I try to find frames that do not mix and match, on purpose.
