Humans as food?

Asked by Kandy (363points) November 27th, 2011

Humans eat meat from animals. Humans are animals. Humans do not eat humans because it is ‘wrong.’ In the animal world, cannibalism happens all the time. Why don’t we eat fellow humans?

I’m not a cannibal, I just got done watching a zombie movie and started thinking.

Well some do… But if you mean why isn’t it a more common practice then, probably because it fucks with society too much. You generally don’t want to hang out with people who might eat you. Plus most cases of endocannibalism have little to do with nutritional values. Exocannibalism usually takes place principally in order scare the shit out of neighboring tribes, or just cause that’s what you get off on, and again not a food thing. I doubt that mammals account for much of the animal kingdom’s recorded acts of cannibalism. Not our shtick.

Also, I’m not sure we taste that great.

Where does Cannibalism happen all the time in the animal kingdom?

We’ve created a society where we don’t need to eat humans.

Cannibalism happens with insects, birds, fish, spiders, and mammals. Some animals, such as the praying mantis, has a type of sexual cannibalism. The female typically eats the male after mating.

In the animal world, they don’t need to eat their own kind, (minus dire situations), but they do anyways. I see your point, though.

Not a good idea. There’s going to be too much drama.

We’re not easy to digest… That’s why cannibals are shaky all the time.

@AshLeigh Plus, I don’t think I could eat someone as cute as you. Maybe a marshmallow version of you though. Lol.

Hah. Thanks. :D
But don’t get to comfortable… You never know, I might bite your head off. ;)

We taste nasty, like all carnivores do. People eat herbivores like deer and cows. They don’t eat lions and hyenas.

@Dutchess_III . . . I think I could get down on some dairy friendly vegetarians. They’re not all stringy like strict vegans and c’mon, how could anything fed out on ice cream not taste awesome?

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! Well, if they were a vegetarian it might be different! We’ll have to design an experiment. We can set up in the Mall and do blind taste tests.

All we need are some volunteers. : )

<—Vegetarian… O.o
Oh snap.

Like @everephebe mentioned, acts of cannibalism rarely have anything to do with nourishment, and it certainly never occurs on a daily basis. Cannibal tribes may eat the flesh from their fallen enemies, because through this, they believe to pay respect to fallen warriors/gain their strength/whatever else. Cannibals usually spent (or spend, if there are any left) a good portion of their time hunting and gathering.

As for cannibalism in modern society, it can often stem from a mental disorder, feitsh/obsession gone too far…whether it’s ’‘right’’ or not though, it doesn’t abide by modern society’s standards. It would also be considered murder.
You should watch this movie, Grim Love which is based on a true story. Somebody on here even linked me the now pretty much defunct site on which the movie based itself. It just shows printed screens. A website for cannibals to meet and talk, and these two dudes got together, and one ate the other. The movie is kind of laughable, but it’s one of those that takes ’‘based on a true story’’ seriously, and stays with the source, rather than taking one element of it and making something else altogether.
Cannibal Holocaust is an extremely disturbing movie, however it provides authentic information about cannibalistic tribes.

Errant thoughts haha. But yeah, we don’t practice it because killing is illegal, and even if cannibalism was meant as a daily source of nourishment, we don’t need to resort to that.

We do not eat people because we interact on an emotional level with each other. We have names and made up words and inside jokes. Hell, most of us don’t even eat dogs, cats and horses because we live with them and let them share in our private lives. BUT…When the shit hits the fan you can sure as hell be sure that folks will be eating each other. You can count on that.

Mad cow disease was thought to be caused by cows being fed food containing cow’s brains and other left over products from meat industry. So maybe it’s a survival thing? I also think it is to do with the emotional attachment as mentioned. Anyone for horse sausage, or cat pie? Thought not

Horses and cats have actually gone in and out of style in many different cultures over the last couple of thousand years.
