Why do I keep getting mysterious bruises?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) December 14th, 2011

I haven’t bumped into anything, yet there’s a huge, tender, purple and green bruise on my calf. And this seems to happen quite frequently! Where are they coming from?

Have you been taking ibuprofen or aspirin lately? Have you changed your diet? If you are noticing bruising and you cannot account for accidents, you need to see your Dr. There are definite reasons why bruising can increase.

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

I am guessing either alien abduction or evil toys coming to life in your house while you sleep.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@annewilliams5 I’ve had a little ibuprofen and/or tylenol, but no more than usual. And no changes with my diet or other regular medicines either. It’s just strange… perhaps I will ask my doctor if it happens again.

Good answer as well. @Imadethisupwithnoforethought
A little out there…but thought provoking. Hit on the head much?...

In all seriousness @WillWorkForChocolate, sometimes it only takes a little. If you’re not someone who takes it, as a rule, it might just be thinning your blood temporarily. Don’t mix ibuprofen and acetaminophen, and watch how much you take. Follow the directions on the bottle—absolutely! Liver damage is not something you want to live or die with. Your doctor is the go-to person for advice about new aches and pains and pain related to past injuries.

@annewilliams5 I crush on wwfc a little. Don’t pick on me while I am trying to charm her.

@annewilliams5 Oh, trust me, my body is so used to ibuprofen and tylenol, LOL. I have an incredibly high tolerance for any sort of pain medication, so I have to take more than “normal” people. I doubt my body would go into shock if I took 6 tylenol at one time, haha!

I’m wondering if I may have a low platelet count for some reason, so at my next Dr. visit, which is next month anyway, I’ll likely have that checked out. Thanks for your comment and concern! =0) And we have a lot of crazy people here who’ve been hit on the head one too many times, teehee!

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought Hmmm, evil toys. I’ve never thought of them as “evil”, but perhaps they’ve developed minds of their own, eh? I’m gonna say a big fat “NO” to the alien abduction though, because I definitely would remember being probed again by those dirty bastards that. You crush on me a little? D’awwwww, I’m blushing!

Someone is breaking in and beating the crap out of you while you sleep. It’s the only explanation.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

LOL! They must be heavily drugging me first, then. Which could explain why I keep waking up feeling so exhausted and groggy lately…

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Do you fidget in your sleep or sleepwalk/stumble about?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Nope. I typically only sleep on my sides, and I stay in the same spot in my bed all night. Occasionally I’ve slept so heavily that I’ve woken up in the same exact position I fell asleep in.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate: It’s your man then, he’s kicking you.~

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Haha, damn him. Well, it serves me right I guess- I smack his shoulder every time he makes me mad in a dream. =0)

Neizvestnaya's avatar

When you start waking up with bite and/or scratch marks then it’s time to call in the local paranormal squad. o_o

Is there any chance you could have a vitamin deficiency? Low levels of C, E, K, zinc, and folic acid can all be associated with bruising easily.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I don’t think so, since I’m pretty good at keeping up with my vitamins and supplements. It’s still possible though, I guess.

@Neizvestnaya Oooh, creepy, thanks a lot! Now I won’t sleep tonight at all… :P Honey, I think there’s someone under the bed!!

HungryGuy's avatar

I think it has a lot to do with how you sleep. I sometimes fall asleep in odd positions, and find bruises on places, for example, where my head was resting against my wrist.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I don’t know where they are coming from. But don’t beat yourself up over it.

CWOTUS's avatar

It’s definitely worth having a doctor’s opinion. All bruising is essentially subcutaneous bleeding of one form or another. If you don’t know the reason already, then you should find out; it could be important.

john65pennington's avatar

Bruises do not have to have a reason, if you are taking blood thinners.

They just appear on their own.

KalWest's avatar

@CWOTUS
Ditto. Get a doctor’s opinion!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Thanks guys. I’m definitely going to ask my doc and see what he thinks about testing my platelet count.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies LOL, I’ll try not to. =0)

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

Not to scare you @WillWorkForChocolate, but my Mom had that a few years ago, and the diagnosis was AML leukemia. Go to the doctor and get a blood test done. When there’s unexplained bruising, it often means the platelets (or other blood cells) aren’t doing their job normally. It could just be a sign of aging.

Keep_on_running's avatar

I know for me I tend to forget how I get bruises, usually if I’m distracted or something is intensely occupying my mind at the time, I won’t even realise the pain that caused the bruise. That could be it.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

For anyone still following: I just got the test results back and everything is completely normal. I still don’t remember bumping into things when these bruises appear, but at least I know it’s not a medical issue.

HungryGuy's avatar

Maybe you’re sleepwalking and bumping into things…

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

LOL, I don’t sleepwalk. I promise.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate That’s great to hear. :)

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@MRSHINYSHOES You have no idea of my relief when the doc told me “everything is perfectly fine, you are in wonderful health”........ I had gotten so paranoid thinking, “something is wrong, something is wrong”, that I almost cried when he told me my CBC was clear and the rest of the blood tests were all normal.

My doctor was actually kind of funny and suggested perhaps my hubby is getting mad and kicking me while he’s dreaming, lol.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate You haven’t been punching and kicking the wall or dresser when you’re dreaming, have you? I’ve punched the wall a couple of times during dreaming. Lol.

Yes, I can imagine your relief. It’s always stressful awaiting the results.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@MRSHINYSHOES Haha, no. I murder people and beat the crap out of things in my mind, but not in reality. =0)
