When does the pain of a UTI go away with antibiotics?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) January 16th, 2012

I’ve had UTIs in the past before and the pain went away quickly with treatment within hours. This UTI was so severe last night I seriously wanted to go to the ER but I couldn’t afford it. Anyways, I’m just wondering how long do you think it takes for pain to go away? It’s been several hours and the treatment just turned my pee orange and I still feel pain when going to the bathroom.

I know the causes and symptoms and to pee after sex. I’m just wondering when this will kick in. I have pills for only 3 days…I could’ve sworn it takes like a week/

Usually those pills that make you pee orange (or red) are supposed to help with the pain. Are they OTC or did you get them from your doc with the antibiotics?

Doctor. And yeah it turned it orange, weird lol It hurts to pee but it isn’t as painful at all as yesterday night. That was a nightmare.

Yeah, the antibiotics will clear the infection, and the orange pills should help with the pain. If it was particularly bad (which seems to be the case), it might take a little longer for the discomfort to go away.

I’m just hoping 3 days is enough for my treatment. I thought it usually takes longer for treatment.

Are you drinking a ton of water? That’s the trick.

You should notice the symptoms become much less after 24 hours.

Yeah, drinking a lot of water and 100% cranberry juice. It was hurting so bad yesterday I couldn’t sleep or walk. I was counting the hours till the clinic opened.

I hope that 100% cranberry juice isn’t the product I looked at a couple of days ago with a label that said “100% Juice” and beneath that, “Cranberry.” It may be all juice, all right, but the ingredients are quite a mix and definitely not all cranberry.

You made me look at it. It says a blend of 4 other juices, hmm. Well, I also have AZO cranberry pills

Cranberry really only helps to prevent infection, by making the bladder lining slippery. Once you have an infection, sugary juices may actually make it worse. Nothing wrong with plain water.

You may need a different antibiotic this time since you stated you’ve had UTI’s in the past. Continue with your treatement. If the pain remains, go back to the clinic/doc you went to and let them know it’s not clearing up.

Have you addressed why you’re gettting UTIs?

As @ANef_is_Enuf stated above, large doses of Cranberry taken on an emptied bladder prior to bedtime can help to prevent UTIs, but it will not clear one up. You do need to cut back the sugars while you have an infection.

Oh okay. I get it because of sex usually. i get them easily

Do you empty your bladder after sex? (every time without fail) Besides that, if you’re really that susceptible, you may need to urinate, then wash afterwards.

DrBill's avatar

it depends on how serious the UTI is and what you are taking for it

Isn’t it also possible that there could be some passing back and forth of the infection-causing microbes?
