Where in New York can I eat the best clam chowder?

Asked by Eggie (5921points) February 5th, 2012

Is there a place in New York that anyone knows that I can try the best clam chowder? I have never tried it before and when I am trying it I want to taste the best.

The best clam chowder is not in New York, it is in New England. :D

OK, first you have to decide if you want classic New England clam chowder (white) or Manhattan (with tomatoes).

I prefer New England (as does everyone with a palate).

Try the Lure Fish bar in Soho or the Oyster Bar and Restaurant in Grand Central Station.

Well, to do that, you have to take the NJ Transit train to Carteret and go to The Chower Pot (it’s a short taxi ride from the Woodbridge station to the restaurant). They have both Manhattan and New England clam chowder (choose whichever warps your starship).

I agree with @marinelife. Grand Central Station. Sit at the counter if you’re alone.

I make an awesome new england clam chowder but you would have to come to Massachusetts for it lol ;) Other than that I would suggest looking for Manhattan Chowder since that is a New York chowder but its the red soup good but not as good as new england chowder

McAffee’s! On the corner of 32nd and Lincoln, it’s very delicious.

Mmmm…my grandmother used to set a big kettle on the fire right on the beach. She’d chop onions and peel potatoes and heat the milk while my grandfather and their four sons went down to the edge of the water and dug the clams. This was in Maine. I can still remember it, the freshest clam chowder anyone could possibly get.

My test of a seafood restaurant is always its clam chowder. First, it has to be white. Then, if it doesn’t measure up, I won’t be back. But it’ll never be the equal of Grammy’s.

I’d love to taste what you folks are recommending in Grand Central Station!

Sit at the bar, where the oyster-shuckers are working. They have special chowder-making appliances built in to the counters. I always forget to ask the guys how they work.
