Reducing scar appearance?

Asked by Kandy (363points) May 2nd, 2012

I scar REALLY easy and they don’t fade easily. Simple bug bites leave me with nasty scars. Is there any way to fade these out?

People say rubbing Vitamin E on scars can be helpful and there are various OTC scar reducers but if you have keloid skin as I do, not much will make a difference.

Try the vitamin E. It comes in capsules. Stick a pin in the capsule and rub a drop of the vitamin substance into the healing wound. It’s kind of oily. Or maybe there’s a vitamin E ointment. Oh. There’s Vitamin D & E ointment, which is a cream or a kind of gel and rubs into the skin more easily. It’s used for healing faster and may affect scarring for the better.

There are two products that I swear by- Mederma and Bio Oil. They are both great for reducing visibility of scars.

I hope these remedies help you. I hope you someday have a significant other who never sees any physical imperfections when they look at you. That is the best remedy of all!

Ask your regular doctor for a prescription cream containing Retin A and then stay out of the sun.

I’ve got heavily freckled but not pale skin which scars similarly and nothing has ever worked OTC for me. Tazorac cream did fade and also reduce slightly some raised scars. It’s expensive, it has a shelf life, it’s temperature sensitive and it’s a mild peel which means the skin gets sensitive, feels burns, swells. Maybe not on everyone though.

You probably need to be more vigilent at preventing the scars. When you get a bite, scrape, or cut, use an ointment like neosporin or bacetracin, even vaseline, and keep the area moist with the ointment. It will take longer to heal, but the collagen is more likely to regranulate better. The notion let it scab over and dry out, leaves more scarring.

There are laser treatments I think that can help reduce scars, but I don’t know much about it.
