[Off topic, so I’m probably going to be modded] I would like to spank teachers who give idiotic assignments like this.

Well, there’s always Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. It’s a good song even if you don’t need it for school.

Are there any specifications about how the songs should relate to R&J?

There are some fight scenes: “Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting”. Romeo saw her at a ball- “I Saw her Standing There” by the Beatles. He thinks she’s dead- “Teen Angel”.

I could go on and on but it’s not that hard.

Elvis Costello did an entire CD called The Juliet Letters, which was full of songs relating to the play. The only hit was regarding the lawyers Jackson Monk and Rowe.

Though I’m also partial to Dire Straits, I also appreciate Prokofiev. Bring a little more culture to the project.

there is no specific way that these songs have to relate they just have to relate!!!

One approach is to think of themes of the play. You could even express them as “I” statements because so many songs are written that way. Then think of songs that express those themes. For example:

• You’re so beautiful, and you don’t know I’m alive.
• You’re a stranger to me, but I’m attracted to you.
• Our parents won’t approve, but I love you anyway.
• How do I know you’ll be faithful?
• They think we’re just kids, but this is for real.
• What a glorious night we just had.
• I can’t live without you.

Check this out. I had a strategy to search for the songs and it worked. I googled quotes from Romeo and Juliet. I started with Mercutio, just for the hell of it. I found a likely quote, “under love’s heavy burden do I sink”. Here is where I found the quote. And then I put the quote into google search adding the word lyric. Voila!!! Shakespeare plagiarized in lyric form!

Singing in my Sleep by Semisonic.

this song is also a sentiment expressed by Juliet here…“Farewell! God knows when we shall meet again.
I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins,...”

Romeo & Juliet by the Indigo Girls.

Taylor Swift – Enchanted
Taylor Swift – Love Story
Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know
Rihanna – We Found Love
Pixie Lott – My Love
Lights – Banner
Everything – Lifehouse
Incubus – Stellar

Obviously there are going to be some areas in these that don’t fit with Romeo and Juliet, but I did this project a few years back and learned that teachers will give you a good grade as long as you make a case for your songs by connecting the lyrics to themes in the storyline. This is just what I could come up with off the top of my head. I hope it helps!

The Doors – “Hello I Love You” (A song about Romeo’s attitude towards all young women, which is finally returned by Juliet.)

t.A.T.u – “Friend or Foe” (A song about love threatened by underlying rivalries, such as how Juliet feels after Romeo kills Tybalt.)

Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” (A song addressed to a woman torn between two proposals: one from a man she loves, the other from a man her parents like; compare Juliet’s choice between Romeo and Paris.)

Emiliana Torrini – “Jungle Drum” (A song about a sudden and intense passion between two people from different backgrounds.)

Tonic – “If You Could Only See” (A song about the sacrifices people make for love.)

De/Vision – “Star-Crossed Lovers” (This being how Shakespeare describes Romeo and Juliet’s relationship in the play’s prologue.)

SavoirFaire's avatar

The Beatles – “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” (Another song about all-consuming passion, just like Romeo and Juliet have for one another.)

SavoirFaire's avatar

Garbage – ”#1 Crush” (A song about both obsession and being willing to give up anything for another person. It even opens with the lyrics “I would die for you,” which Romeo and Juliet end up doing.)

SavoirFaire's avatar

The Cardigans – “Lovefool” (This song actually works quite well for the period of time when Juliet is worried that Romeo may be playing her false. It’s about wanting someone to be true and resisting suggestions to pursue someone else instead. Juliet’s mother attempts to persuade her to marry Paris while she is lovesick for Romeo shortly after the balcony scene.)
