Are vacuums a good tool for hard floors or what do you use to keep your hard floors clean?

Asked by DaphneT (5750points) July 11th, 2012

Sweeping is occasionally a pain in the back, and I thought a vacuum cleaner would work quicker. What are some features I should look for on a vacuum cleaner that would make it work well on hardwood floors?

I use a swiffer sweeper about 2 times a week. Every 3–6 months I wax.

Make sure the vacuum cleaner you get has a setting for hard floors as well as carpeting. I almost always use a vacuum cleaner rather than sweeping.

If you want to use a vacuum cleaner on hardwood floors make sure that the beater feature is turned off.

If you are going to get a vacuum, make sure it also has a tube and the attachments for edging and brushing.

My wife likes to damp mop the hard floors, esp in the kitchen and around the birdcages (think tossed bits of fruit). But that does Not pick up the dust it makes mud if there is dust. If I see her starting up with the bucket I try to get ahead of her with my shop-vac with a wide flat nozzle to get all the loose dust. Along the corners and edges I take off the nozzle and hit it with just the tube. The whole place gets a vacuuming every weekend.

A broom when you want to work in silence, a vacuum cleaner when you don’t mind the noise and wash the floor with a mop and hot water and detergent once or twice a week, dependent upon the amount of traffic and dirty feet passing through. My house has polished wooden floors.

Personally, I don’t like vacuums on hard floors because it really annoys me, and I find it unhelpful when picking up dirt. Just go old school with a broom.

I have a Miele, a german brand that is specifically for flooring and area rugs. My house exactly. I love it, sucks great and easy to maneuver and store with attachments and a lightweight upright.

Thanks everyone! I’m going to have to really look at the models available in my price range and see what they offer.
