Do you think it's weird to sleep naked?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) August 28th, 2012 from iPhone

I haven’t tried it, but I imagine it would feel uncomfortable and distracting. Do you know if it has any health benefits?

For the past 40-odd years I’ve found it weird the few times I’ve had to not sleep naked.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I do it most of the time. I sleepwalk a lot so I try to wear boxers at night, but they often end up on the floor rather than on me. It’s just more comfortable to me.

LuckyGuy's avatar

No. I used to love it. Now, not so much.

wonderingwhy's avatar

Wouldn’t call it weird at all. I have and do sleep naked though less than I sleep with PJ’s on. In summer I think PJ’s help keep me cooler. Maybe there’s some science behind the added breathable layer. Maybe it’s just in my head knowing I can lose another layer if I get too hot. In winter, naked just seems more… cozy. I just make sure to keep the kimono next to the bed for a quick transition when I get up.

Bellatrix's avatar

No. I feel very uncomfortable sleeping in clothes. It feels especially lovely to slip your nakedness in between crisp, clean sheets. Lovely. I have no evidence of health benefits but I suppose it lets you move freely and lets the air to your body.

Bellatrix's avatar

@LuckyGuy, why not so much now? What changed?

ninja_man's avatar

I think it is the best. If you try it you will get hooked. No health benefits I know of, other than awesome sleep.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@Bellatrix Quite often doing so would lead to extracurricular activities. Now, not so much.

Bellatrix's avatar

Ahhh… that just raises a whole host more questions for a nosey person like me :-) However, meetings call so my curiosity will have to wait until later!

flutherother's avatar

I slept in boxers in the US because it was so warm at night. Here I use my PJ’s and I get a better sleep.

chyna's avatar

I don’t think it’s weird to sleep naked. I don’t do it often, but I do like the feel of cool sheets on my skin. I don’t sleep nude in the winter, however. It gets way too cold for that.

bookish1's avatar

Why would it be weird? It’s just a matter of what you get used to. I switch it up depending on my mood and the season.

Nullo's avatar

It always seemed a bit unsanitary to me.
@flutherother makes a good point about the pajamas – the greater warmth (important even in the U.S.) and the slight constriction can have a beneficial effect on one’s sleep.

syz's avatar

What’s weird about it?

augustlan's avatar

Sleeping naked is the best. I used to think it was weird, too, until I got pregnant and started ripping off my nightshirt in my sleep. Once I experienced it a few times, there was no going back. If I have to sleep in clothes, it’s the bare minimum… a camisole-like tank top and undies.

AmWiser's avatar

Ditto @ninja_man and @Bellatrix. It’s so liberating and free. To me it’s more distracting to have confining garments on.

janedelila's avatar

I am a thrasher, so I must sleep naked or get all tangled in my pjs, which is so irritating. @Nullo unsanitary? I would never have thought that. What the heck are you getting all over your sheets?~

Only138's avatar

Nope, not at all. Nude or boxers is the way for me. :)

DominicX's avatar

For me, it is. I’ve never really liked the way it feels. Always seems like something’s missing…

MilkyWay's avatar

I love sleeping nude… never even imagined it as weird.
I don’t like wearing my nightie unless it’s winter.

creative1's avatar

Sleeping in the nude or pantiless for women gives your private area a chance to breath and get air which it help to keep the yeast infections away. I only sleep totally nude if I have a man to cuddle up to but usually sleep without panties.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@MilkyWay I don’t even wear my nightie in Winter. And it gets cold here.

Berserker's avatar

No way, sleeping naked is awesome, that’s the best way to feel the softness of the blankets everywhere.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Symbeline If you’re a guy sleeping naked, feeling hardness is fun too.

Berserker's avatar

Yeah but morning wood doesn’t sound fun at all. Lol.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

sorry guys, rough night tonight. I’m a little wild. Morning wood is cool. It feels good. Unless you roll over and it gets caught in the blankets.

Berserker's avatar

LMAO lol XD

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Symbeline Oh sure. Imagine this thing stuck out in front of you, you roll over, and its on your side. LMAO is not going to be your first choice.:)

AshLeigh's avatar

No, I find it amazing, and comfortable.
If I could get away with it, I would never wear clothes.

cookieman's avatar

Nope. I sleep nekkid quite often. I have trouble sleeping clothed as I’ll get tangled in my shirt or twisted in my shorts.

wundayatta's avatar

I love sleeping naked. I do it all summer. In the winter, I wear a t-shirt because my shoulders tend to get cold when they stick out of the covers.

I can’t imagine what is unsanitary about it.

I would much prefer it if my partner also slept naked, but she doesn’t. That tends to put a damper on nighttime activities. I know women who have slept nude to indicate an interest, but otherwise sleep in pajamas. Sad, sad, sad.

In another life, I’d love a woman who sleeps naked all the time. We would get along just fine!

Only138's avatar

@wundayatta Yes, naked chicks RULE!!!! :)

Nullo's avatar

@janedelila I am not, but there are lots of people in this world who are to some extent mechanically impaired with regards to the lavatory, or else are simply careless. Such a person would do well to remain clothed, or find a more effective solution.
I share a space with other people, none of whom would be happy to see me ambling about in my skin. Were I not already inclined to stay dressed to some degree, I would be obliged by common decency to dress every time I left my room, for which I might as well just remain dressed.

Anyway, it gets dang cold here. I have winter-specific pajamas.

Supacase's avatar

I don’t think it is weird, but I’m not comfortable sleeping naked. Literally, I can’t get comfortable. An example would be that I don’t like the insides of my thighs touching. Clothing removes the skin-on-skin contact and allows me to relax.

augustlan's avatar

@Supacase Ooh, I don’t like my thighs touching, either. I sleep with a pillow between my legs. If you’re a side sleeper, that’s better for your hips/back anyway.

Supacase's avatar

@augustlan It isn’t only my thighs. Anything that doesn’t normally touch… or maybe it is parts that make me feel fat when they can touch? Stomach fat & boobs, etc.

Sunny2's avatar

I love the feeling of sleeping naked on the cool sheets, but I keep something to wrap around me quickly should the phone or doorbell ring. Why I’m not comfortable answering the phone naked, I do not know.

ninja_man's avatar

@Sunny2 Probably the same reason I don’t answer the phone on the toilet: Some things are nice naked, some things are not.

Sunny2's avatar

I have talked on the phone while sitting on the toilet, come to think of it, but not naked and not often. . . . .

AshLeigh's avatar

I talk on the phone naked all the time.
When I’m home alone, I don’t wear clothes, unless it’s cold. Then I wear pajamas. I like to be comfortable.

janedelila's avatar

@Nullo I always have my bedroom door closed, so I hang a robe on the doorknob. Even if I’m barely awake it reminds me to put it on. I can’t get the door open without taking the robe off of it. There have been a few cussing incidents involved there.

Keep_on_running's avatar

I like the idea of getting out of bed with at least my butt covered, just in case.

LuckyGuy's avatar

^ I think that way too. When we have a lightning storm, admittedly a relatively rare event, I get up and get dressed.

ucme's avatar

Not in the least, I always sleep with nowt on.
I do however think that fat women with large titties should not sleep naked, particularly those who smoke.
Turning over in the middle of the night & smashing an ash tray with a runaway breast can’t be considered a wise move, think of the health risks alone.

MilkyWay's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Hmm, I imagine getting morning wood in the winter would be hard difficult as it’s so cold…

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@MilkyWay Surprising but true, Mr Happy is adaptable to all climates….

LuckyGuy's avatar

@MilkyWay @Adirondackwannabe Don’t forget about cold “shrinkage”.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGX5OCfX6vE .

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@LuckyGuy Your link didn’t work. Was it George? Shrinkage happens. :)

MilkyWay's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Just copy and paste it man :P

LuckyGuy's avatar

Trying the link again. Shrinkage Women need to know about this stuff.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Not at all. I usually sleep naked, I only wear clothes in bed if I am staying at someone elses house and, even then, I have been known to get frustrated and get rid of the clothes in the middle of the night due getting uncomfortable in them.

deni's avatar

No way, but I think a lot of people do. It came up amongst a group of my friends recently and everyone was all “What?! Sleep naked?! Who does that?!” I’m like AHEM. I can’t understand why you wouldn’t, unless it’s cold out of course or you share a room with someone.

wilma's avatar

I have kids and who knows when I will have to jump out of bed for something.
Also I know a woman who always slept naked, until she had a house fire in the middle of the night.
She didn’t like the exposure with all those firemen and neighbors around.

downtide's avatar

I love sleeping naked when it’s warm enough. Unfortunately in England, it’s warm enough about two nights a year on average, unless I turn the heating way up all year round.

Earthgirl's avatar

I don’t think it’s weird at all. In fact, I hate sleeping any other way. It’s such a joy to throw off all my clothes and crawl in between some nice soft sheets. If I wore clothes in bed I would not be free to twist and turn as I please. It’s a feeling of liberation and freedom almost akin to being an infant. Birthday suit, yeah, way to go.
sad thing is that I designed women’s sleepwear for years and wish more people would dress up to go to bed. But dressing up to go to bed isn’t the same thing as wearing it all night! The joy is in stripping it off….or having someone else strip it off for you!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Earthgirl Yes! Finally someone who gets it all.GA

Earthgirl's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe yeah, I’ve thought a lot about what people want to wear in bed :)

Bellatrix's avatar

Nightwear = wrapping paper on a present.

cookieman's avatar

•:. 2AM EST .:•

Cookie-Man has awoken to visit the toilette.

Naked.

Coloma's avatar

Oh my…I always sleep naked, I can’t STAND being tangled up in any clothing while sleeping.
I hate spending the night at other peoples homes and having to wear PJ’s. Ack, so uncomfortable. I have the most awesome memory foam bed and I use an extra soft fleecy blanket as a top sheet, bliss out to the 10th power!
