NSFW: Is this a yeast infection, or what?

Asked by michaelangelo (60points) September 4th, 2012

I have had this ongoing issue for maybe 2 weeks now. I also just got an STD test and have not had unprotected sex since, so it shouldn’t be anything like that going on. Basically I have never had a yeast infection and from what I read, I don’t have most of the symptoms of one, thus why I’m asking this question. So for the past couple weeks my clitoris has been itching….not constantly though and it’s one of those itches where when you “scratch” (but more like rub) it, it is so deeply satisfying. I have no weird discharge or anything, if anything I have been “drier” down there. And the itch is right on my clit. But other than that, nothing weird is really going on. There is no swelling, or burning. Maybe the tiniest bit of burning WHERE I’ve been itching, but I feel that’s gotta be related…I’m not itchy anywhere else, but the itch I do have is KILLIN ME! It’s obviously difficult to scratch in public, at work, whatever. So does anyone know what this is? Googling “itchy clit” did not yield too many helpful results aside from the suggestion of yeast infection…

I now see from looking at past Fluther questions regarding yeast infections that antibiotics can cause them. I was on antibiotics about 2 weeks ago for an infection I got in a gash in my foot…..is that the culprit? God dammit.

Did the STD test cover herpes?

You might try using “itchy clitoris” as your search term. That’s the technical term. “Clit” is just slang.

You would get something like this site.

Several times, I have been on antibiotics for an inner ear infection and had the same reaction. This is common, and an over-the-counter anti-itch cream can solve the problem immediately. The best thing to do is schedule an appointment with a doctor. It’s the only way to find out what is causing it and stop the worrying.

@Adirondackwannabe Yeah, I think it was the basic ghonnorrhea/chlamydia/herpes/HIV test

Really? Couldn’t possibly have an SDT from having unprotected sex before you were tested?

@michaelangelo Okay. Itching is a sign of herpes.

Could be BV which is super common and treatable

It could be a yeast infection, but the only way to know for sure would be to have your ob/gyn do a culture. They can usually test it while you wait and tell you right away. I would definitely make an appointment if I were you.

@Trillian I don’t understand what you mean? If the test was negative….........?

Trillian's avatar

@michaelangelo so, your test has already come back? You wrote that you had just gotten it…

Not all STD panels test for herpes, and even those that do may offer questionable results.
I have known several friends who either 1.) thought they had been tested for herpes, only to find out that they weren’t tested (and ended up having it) or 2.) were tested for herpes and received a false positive. It wouldn’t hurt to have your doctor take a look. You may have a yeast infection without discharge, sometimes it will be visible to your doctor because s/he can see the cervix is inflamed and/or has signs of discharge that may not be enough in quantity for you to notice. If it doesn’t stop in the next day, I’d make an appointment. I’d also specifically ask if the panel you received included testing for herpes 1 & 2.

Also… stop scratching/rubbing it. Even if it feels good, rubbing, scratching, otherwise messing with irritated skin is a bad idea, but especially when it is in such a sensitive area that is already susceptible to infection. You can purchase OTC ointments that may relieve your discomfort.

@Trillian Oh, sorry yes. What I meant was I just got one and it was negative.

Come on…herpes? This sounds nothing like herpes. Sure, itching is a symptom, but if there are no sores/blisters/swelling or worsening of symptoms in two weeks, there’s no reason to think it’s herpes.

It could be many things. See a doctor if you can. You can also try home remedies (taking acidophills, yogurt, tea tree oil, etc) in the meantime.

Other symptoms have come up in the past day and I’m now 100% sure it is a yeast infection, any recommended brands or specific treatments? I have heard about yogurt.

Yogurt can help, but you’re probably better off going to the drugstore and buying a Monistat treatment. You can still eat the yogurt, too, though.

@michaelangelo I think the best thing to do is to get a prescription from your doctor. One Diflucan or similar pill and 24 hours later you’ll be feeling better. It’s the quickest way to cure it. If you prefer not to see a doctor, you can try Monistat as @DigitalBlue says, but some people have allergies to that and don’t know it. I used it once a couple of years ago and it made the itching so intense that I was crying. I had to get in the tub and get all the medication out. It made the infection worse and I ended up going to the doctor anyways.

If it’s a mild yeast infection, some home remedies are yogurt (eating and also applying to the outside or inside of the vagina – messy it can help), wearing only cotton panties, keeping the area clean, loose clothing, and AZO makes a probiotic pill for yeast that alleviates symptoms and prevents future occurrences (some people see results, some don’t). There’s also tea tree oil (stinks, but it works), among countless other things that people claim work. Like I said, I find it much easier to go to the doctor and get the pill.

As for helping with the itching until the infection is gone, a lot of people use Vagisil. I don’t get much relief from that and it wears off quickly. So, instead of applying Vagisil every hour, I use Desitin. Yep, the diaper rash ointment. It’s amazing and stops the itching in its tracks. It also has zinc, which can do you nothing but good when you have a vaginal infection. If you have hair there, though, it’s hell to get off. But it’s worth it. :)

yeah, if it’s just your clitoris, my inclination is something in your urine may be bothering you since your clitoris covers your uthera – are you using any lubes or what kind of soap do you use – have you changed it? yeast generally will be in your vagina as well and if they did a pap smear STD panel, surly they would have checked for yeast while they were there, but ask if they did. The only way you can test for herpes if you don’t have a blister is by blood test – it will show an antibody. If you don’t have a blister, I doubt you have herpes – everyone I know who has had it says they got real bad flu symptoms with their first outbreak and their first outbreak was around their period. Maybe you rubbed the skin raw from sex or masturbation – something to consider.
