Costumes: Greek Goddess. How to ideas from scratch?

Asked by AuroraSolei (222points) October 9th, 2012

I am making my greek goddess outfit from scratch for Halloween. It is typically what you would see but I am curious to what you all would add to it to make it stand out from the crowd. Accessories? Material? Hair? Make-up? How to make the sandles?

Are you going for a particular one? Because there’s a lot of things you could add depending on the goddess. Also, please don’t just go with a toga, that’s lazy.

@BhacSsylan I was thinking going with a very simple toga. Really nice hair, great eye makeup and a nice scent. keep the costume simple so she shines in it.

My dress is not just a toga. It is a traditional A-Line cut dress, but the bodice slits down and is held together with sheer gold fabric. The straps come up like a toga would but are clasped together with gold rings. The length of the dress is floor with a flowing affect to it. I live in Northern Minnesota——gets a bit brisky up here, plus with the plunging neckline less skin is more.

@AuroraSolei Sounds gorgeous. You’re there.

@Adirondackwannabe Bah, a simple toga is, frankly, boring. Why go out of your way to find a toga when you can make a far more interesting and unique look?

And case in point is that agreed, that sounds pretty great, @AuroraSolei. I would suggest picking a goddess, though, as it will allow you to add some cool additions. Do you know the goddesses? I could give you pointers if your interested.

You should totally have Bubo on your shoulder :P

@BhacSsylan I stand corrected, obviously.

I am not too sure on which goddess… but I have this theory for an amazing arm cuff… I figured I would take a rubber snake and put a jewlery wire through it and form it into a cuff and spray paint it gold. Anyone have ideas for shoes? That is really my ownly concern?

Well, that does sound pretty great, though snakes are not really associated with any one goddess, though you could, say, go with a daughter of Asclepius, god of healing, though the chances of being recognized as such are slim to none. However, it not being a facet of one goddess means you also could wear it along with any other identifying pieces if you went that way. As for shoes, slippers would not be especially out of place, really, or going barefoot, though that will depend on how much you’re comfortable with that/will be going outside.

For ideas on specifics, you could do something like Athena, goddess of battle and wisdom. Find yourself a sword and shield or spear, or do something interesting like a shield on your back and carry around a book. And/or work an owl into your costume (her favorite animal). Or be Iris, a goddess of the sky, with rainbow eyeshadow and nails painted like a sunrise and a vial of water (ostensibly from the river lethe) on a pendant around your neck. Or if you like a gothic look, be Persephone, captured daughter of Demeter, with pale skin and blood red lips (from the juice of the pomegranate). Or be Demeter herself, goddess of the seasons and birth and death. There’s a lot of fun to be had with the goddesses

A crown of gold sprayed leaves?
Gold sprayed flip flops?

I dressed up in a similar outfit a few years ago. I kept it very simple. I wore a toga, a gold jewel-type thing around my head, kept my hair loose, nice eye make-up, etc. Still one of my preferred costumes. Enjoy!

I love the hairstyles from the HBO Rome series. The characters may not be goddesses but they are the correct time period and they are so creative and gorgeous.
I might use gold leaves instead of a tiara as shown here but I love the hair style.
Gold arm bracelets are good and really not that hard to find in costume stores. They are easy enough to make but for the snake bracelet I saw this one the other day for $6 and it was really well made.

I have to think about the easiest way to do the shoes. Do you have gold sandles that you can add a top strap to? If you don’t you can always spray paint an old pair of sandals gold.

I do have the perfect head band for this. It’s a normal headband that’s gold and has golden metal leaves on it. That is where I got the inspiration from.

When I went as Artemis a couple of years ago, I carried a bow wrapped in leather and white rabbit fur, with a bit of fake Eagle feather fringe. . It looked a bit more ethereal than plain wood.
