Do you know of any good cake recipes?

Asked by BBawlight (2437points) December 16th, 2012

I want to make a cake for Christmas because I won’t get any presents unless I make them something in return this year. A cake is easy because it can serve everybody and I won’t sweat over getting everybody something individually.
I want it to be completely homemade, so no boxes!
Do you know of any easy cake recipes that are insanely awesome (or just awesome in general)?

Roughly what kind of cake do you have in mind?

Ah… It doesn’t really matter. It just can’t have peanut butter in it. Just as long as the cake tastes awesome, I don’t really care.

My fiancé made this Olive Oil and Rosemary Cake from Tamar Adler’s book, An Everlasting Meal and it was delicious. Great for people who don’t like super sweet and it has a glaze, rather than frosting, which is better for wrapping and transporting.

I have a German Chocolate Cherry Cake recipe that has been handed down from my Great Great Grandmother that is to die for.

I love this Spicy Layer Cake from Silver Palate.

Does a carrot cake appeal to you? It has the illusion of being less lethal than other cakes because of the 3 c. of chopped carrots.

Frosting is easy.

You can skip all the pecans if you want.

Recipe Google for variations w. coconut, pineapple and walnuts.

@Yeahright here ya go..

1 cup butter 3 C flour
2 C sugar 2 squares melted chocolate
2 C Sour Cream 2 eggs
2 tsp baking soda ¼ tsp salt
1 – 8oz jar of cherries 1 C chopped walnuts

Cream butter & sugar…add eggs and beat well, add melted chocolate; add flour mixed with soda & salt; alternate with sour cream & beat well. Last add cherries which have been cut up small with juice and then nuts; Pour into well oiled & floured 9×12 in. pan. Bake 1 hr 10 mins at 325F (sizzling sound should stop but tooth pick test may not work since this is a moist cake)

2 squares of melted chocolate
3 tsps of cream
½ box of powder sugar
Mix until right consistency to spread.

Do you like cheesecake? If yes, I have a few amazing recipies that I’d be happy to share.

Cheesecakes are very portable and easy to cut and serve.

@BBawlight Drat!
I was going to suggest a scrumptious, from scratch, peanut butter cake I make. Well…back to the drawing board. haha

@PaulSadieMartin I like cheesecake, but my family doesn’t, and that’s who it’s going to.

Just about any cake by Peggy Porschen, and she has fantastic ideas for decorating too.

Quick breads are not exactly cakes in the sense of a round frosted birthday cake, but they are cake-like, are pretty easy to make and wrap as a gift and if you have good recipe, super yummy.

Here’s a few ideas:

Pumpkin this one even tells you how to make your own pumpkin puree from an actual pumpkin, but you can also use canned pumpkin if you don’t want to do as much work.

Cranberry Orange

Triple Ginger Gingerbread

Chocolate with Chocolate Honey Butter Topping

Lemon with Lemon Glaze

Eggnog with Rum Glaze

Then get a cute little plastic Christmas plate and a roll of clear or red cellophane from the 99 Cent Only store and wrap ‘em up and tie with a bow!

All of these cakes sound really awesome! My Language Arts teacher recommended I make something called an “apple cake”. It sounds really great!
I’ll probably end up making two or three cakes at this rate!

@BBawlight Let us know how they turn out : )

Don’t know if this is overly Christmas-y, but one year my aunt made a chocolate cake for my birthday with banana pudding (or custard?) on the inside with whipped cream on top. All home-made. It sounds really simple and plain, but the combination of chocolate, banana, and whip cream was ridiculously delicious.

@Kardamom I made an amazing Apple cake today! It was awesome and the glaze was just absolutely delicious! I haven’t gotten the chance to make any other cakes, but I’ll get back to you guys on those, if I make them.
